Summary

Beaver Island Museum Week is the Beaver Island Historical Society’s annual week of public programming each July: music, lectures, nature walks, an art show, a pet show, and open houses at the Society’s historic sites. It is the Society’s signature public event and, on the held evidence, the island’s longest-running annually named cultural festival still operating today. It is documented in 160 issues of the Beaver Beacon running continuously from 1980 through 2011, and it continues under the same name in the Northern Islander/Northern Light from 2024 into 2026, with a planning announcement already published for July 2026.

The event has always been organized by the Historical Society and centered on its two founding museums — the Print Shop Museum (housed in the Mormon-era print shop) and the Marine Museum (an 1906 net shed) — but its supporting venues have changed over more than four decades: an evening program once held at Holy Cross Parish Hall, an Art Show that moved from the Island Gallery to the Community School gym and, by 2025, to Gregg Fellowship Hall.

The Print Shop Museum, the week’s anchor venue, is the surviving printing office of Strang’s press at the corner of Main and Forest Streets in St. James, in use as the Society’s museum.

Origins

No held source states a founding year outright. The earliest held mention is a passing one: the August 1980 Beacon reports the Beaver Island Sweet Adelines had “also been asked to entertain at the Museum during Museum Week here on the Island,” treating the week as an already-established fixture by that summer.1 The following July’s issue reports “a happy and successful museum week” just concluded, again without describing a first year.2

Three separate held sources give an annual sequence number, and they cluster around, but do not agree on, a single founding year:

  • The July 1985 Beacon calls that year’s event the Society’s “6th annual Museum Week,” which would put the first year at approximately 1980.3
  • The 1989 Beacon calls that year’s “Music on the Porch” the “10th annual,” implying that specific porch-music tradition began around 1979-1980 — not necessarily the same start date as “Museum Week” as a named, week-long program.4
  • The July 2004 schedule and its August 2004 recap both call that year’s program the “24th consecutive”/“24th annual” Museum Week, implying a first year of approximately 1981.56 The August 2006 Beacon similarly calls that year’s event the Society’s “26th” Museum Week during its “49th year” as an organization, again pointing to roughly 1981.7

These are independent editorial counts made years apart, not a single ledger, and they disagree by about a year. None of them is treated here as a founding date; “by 1980” is used because it is the earliest year for which Museum Week is directly attested, not because a founding ceremony or charter has been found.

Organization

Every held year attributes Museum Week to the Beaver Island Historical Society, whose staff and volunteers have organized it under a changing cast of coordinators: Ann Broder, Floss Frank and Museum Director Shirley Gladish in 1988; Kevin Green in 1989; Ann Broder again (with music arranged by Joe Cunningham) in 2006; Doris Larson and Marilyn Reed, and later Robert Cole, organizing “Music on the Porch” across different years.849 CMU’s Biological Station has co-sponsored the Nature Walks component for decades, and the 2004 program credits “the leading merchants” with underwriting the week’s costs.5

Venues

The Print Shop Museum has hosted Music on the Porch, the Pet Show, and Attic Treasures/Book Sale fundraisers throughout the held record.10 The Marine Museum celebrated its own centennial with a Museum Week open house in 2004.5 Protar’s Home on Sloptown Road has been opened for tours in nearly every held year, long hosted by Antje Price, “the Protar Lady.”4 6 The Art Show moved from the Island Gallery in the 1980s to the Beaver Island Community School gym by the 2000s, and — per the 2025 program — to Gregg Fellowship Hall.11 A 2005 date change forced by a scheduling conflict at the church hall (Holy Cross Parish Hall) shows that hall was also a working Museum Week venue in the mid-2000s, and that the traditional dates were the third week of July.12 In 2011 the Art Show was held at the Gregg Fellowship Center (July 20–22, with an author signing there on July 21), while the Community Center hosted that week’s Beaver Tales stage production.13

Editions

Every year with held evidence now has an edition article: 1980-2011 from the Beaver Beacon, and 2024-2026 from the Northern Islander / Northern Light. Only 2012-2023 is unwritten, and deliberately so — no held periodical covers those years, so the 2011 and 2024 editions are not linked to each other by preceded_by / succeeded_by. Counts are the number of held Beaver Beacon issues in that year mentioning “Museum Week”; a low count can reflect a thin year of Beacon publication rather than a thin Museum Week.

Programming and participants

Recurring elements across the held decades: “Music on the Porch” (an evening concert on the Print Shop porch, sometimes moved to a hall in bad weather); a Pet Show for children; a multi-day Art Show; CMU-led Nature Walks; an open house at Protar’s Home; and lecture or slide programs on island history, archaeology, or natural history. Recorded presenters and organizers include Antje Price (Protar Home host across many years), Robert Cole (an ongoing Oral History project featured repeatedly from the early 2000s), Jay Peck (archaeology talks, 2004), Joe Mitchell of the Little Traverse Bay Band (Native American culture, 2004), and Frank and Mary Anne Ettawageshik (Native American pottery demonstration, 1989). No participant is recorded here with a structured role, since no Person-type articles for these individuals exist yet in the knowledge base; they are named in prose only, attributed to the sources above.

Community and economic context

The Society’s own reporting treats Museum Week as both a cultural showcase and a fundraiser. The 1984 treasurer’s report records the week clearing $920 that year;14 the 2001 recap reports over $4,000 raised, with visitors travelling from four states for it;15 the 2004 Art Show alone raised $1,200 for the Society;6 and the January 2011 Beacon describes roughly 75 people involved in staging the week and Society membership grown to the “mid-300s” over the preceding decade.16 The 2025 Northern Islander panel remarks describe a deliberate scheduling relationship between Museum Week and the (separately organized) Beaver Island Music Festival, timed adjacent weekends to extend visitor stays — an economic-tourism coordination attributed to the Print Shop Museum’s and Music Festival’s own organizers, not adopted here as a promotional claim beyond what they said.17

Coverage and evidence limits

Held Beaver Beacon coverage of Museum Week runs continuously, in every year, from 1980 through 2011 (160 issues). Held Northern Islander/Northern Light coverage resumes in 2024 and continues through a 2026 planning notice. 2012-2023 is a hole with no held periodical for this island; nothing here should be read as evidence that Museum Week ran, or did not run, in any of those twelve years.

One correction is recorded here because it was found while assembling this article’s sources: the held July 1982 Beaver Beacon issue is a mixed scan — like the issue behind the 1982 anniversary article, it holds July 1982 material bound together with a later July 1985 insert (confirmed by a duplicated “30 years ago”/Civic-Association-anniversary passage dated June 1985 partway through the issue). The “6th annual Museum Week from July 15-20” line that appears in that issue is the July 1985 text, not a July 1982 statement — the same wording appears, without the surrounding 1982 material, in the separately held July 1985 issue. It is cited above under 1985 for that reason, and should not be read as a sixth-annual claim made in 1982.

Open questions

  • What year did Museum Week actually begin? Held evidence gives a lower bound of 1980 and three internally inconsistent annual counts (implying roughly 1980 or roughly 1981); no charter, incorporation record, or single retrospective account resolves this to one year.
  • Is “Music on the Porch,” called the “10th annual” in 1989, the same tradition as “Museum Week” from its first year, or did the porch concerts predate a formally named, week-long Museum Week program?
  • What happened to Museum Week during 2012-2023? No held periodical covers those years on this island; only an official website and a Chamber of Commerce page (both undated founding-wise) attest to its modern continuation.
  • Did Museum Week run in every one of 1980-2011, or does a year with only one or two matching Beacon issues (1995, 1996) reflect a thin or altered program rather than simply thin Beacon coverage that year?
