Summary
The 1990 Beaver Island Museum Week, its “11th Annual” per the August Beacon, ran July 16-21, coordinated by Floss Frank. That year’s Art Show, organized by Ray and Ruth Denny, raised over $700 – called “the most successful ever” at the time – and Robert Cole led an Oral History program using tape recorders and camcorders to preserve community and family history.
Program
Monday’s Pet Show ran as planned, but Music on the Porch was rained out and relocated to the Community School, with performances by the Christian Church Choir, Cecelia Parker, a CMU student group, Phil Lange, the Eastside Quartet, and Kevin White. Tuesday brought Dr. Jim Gillingham’s Reptile Show and Robert Cole’s Oral History evening. Wednesday: the Protar Home open, hosted by Antje Price; a children’s Treasure Hunt; the Art Show opening at the Community School (Ray and Ruth Denny, over $700 raised); and a Gillingham slide lecture on a decade of CMU research. Thursday’s “Around the Island” cruise, narrated by Helen Collar and Phil Gregg, suffered mechanical and weather setbacks but went ahead; an evening shipwrecks talk by Steve Harold followed. Friday held a children’s biology field trip and a joint Native-American/Irish-culture program by Frank Ettawageshik and Terri Bussy. Saturday closed with the Protar Home open again and an evening of drama, legends and poetry.
Evidence limits
The recap is a serialized, first-person report rather than an official Society program document or financial statement; beyond the Art Show’s $700 figure, no total Museum Week proceeds for 1990 are given in the held issue. Music on the Porch’s usual Print Shop-porch setting was specifically disrupted this year by rain; other days’ events are described at their customary locations without the reporter always restating the venue.
Open questions
- Did the Society recoup or repeat the “Around the Island” cruise the following summer given the 1990 mishaps? (The 1991 recap does record a cruise; see that edition.)
