Media

Four centuries of charts, maps, photographs and recordings — 6,186 with a written description of what is visible in them, so a photograph can be found by what is in it.

Continue into all 6,368 objects, by date →

Every object here is a work in its own right — a chart drawn to navigate by, a map printed to be sold, a photograph, a field recording, a plate this archive drew itself. Each has its own page carrying what the archive knows about it: who holds the original, when a copy was taken, what the rights are as the holder stated them, the exact dimensions and checksum of the file, and a citation you can paste. An object appears here at all only because its recorded rights allow it — what may be reused, and on what terms.

Not everything the archive holds is listed. A page of a newspaper belongs to its issue, and a graphic lifted off an archived website belongs to that capture; neither gets a page here. What is left out, and why, is stated at the foot of this page with counts.

For the archive's holdings at the level of a collection — the whole run of a paper, a whole chart series — see the Bibliography. For its written articles about documents, see Documents & sources.

What is not listed here

These are judgements, not omissions, and each one is written into the manifest generator beside the rule it governs. A file can also be absent because the rights firewall denied it: the archive keeps everything it retrieved, and publishes only what it may.

CorpusFilesWhy
output/maps/places360Per-place locator plate: page furniture regenerated from the KB whenever a place gains coordinates, not a holding. It is published in the infobox of the place it locates, where its ODbL credit is already stated; 213 near-identical pages would be the thin-page liability this manifest exists to avoid.
data/newspapers717Page image of a newspaper issue. The issue is the work and the page belongs to it; /sources/ catalogues the run and the archive search reaches the page text.
data/websites410Inline graphic from an archived website — page furniture belonging to the capture, not a holding. All are denied by the rights firewall in any case.
data/web17Image from an archived third-party page. Rights are unestablished or restricted (the Collar material is held for research and citation only).
data/federal/usgs_3dep17Elevation raster: a geospatial layer the plates are drawn *from*, not a document. It is catalogued in /sources/ under geospatial layers.
data/documents/lomax_afs_annual_report_193920Page images of the 1939 Archive of American Folk Song annual report. The report is the work and has its own catalogue entry.
output/branding6The archive's own medallion and wordmark. Site and print identity, not a holding; it is published in the header of every page.
