Photo hunt

Everything on the archipelago worth pointing a camera at, chosen by the archive rather than by taste: the places the encyclopedia refers to most, plus every tree, bird, plant and surface material the surveys actually document. Filter to a group, or to a theme, and tick them off as you go.

Each card prints one number, and they do not compare. For a place it is how many articles point at it; for an animal, how many observation records exist; for a tree or plant, how many pieces of survey evidence name it. None of them is an abundance — bald eagle leads the animals partly because eagles are conspicuous and partly because people report eagles. 11 targets carry a caution in red: those species are protected, rare or colonial nesters, and the instruction is to photograph from distance or not at all. 11 more are taggednever recorded here — taxa that were searched for and came back empty, kept in because a zero is a finding.

Dune sand

mapped

The barrier dunes are mapped as their own critical dune area. At macro scale, dune sand sorts itself into ripples - get the lens within a hand's width of the surface in low side light.

mapped surface material·Michigan Quaternary geology, mapped on Beaver Island

Lacustrine sand and gravel

mapped

Old lake-bottom and beach material, now dry land. The mixed grain sizes are the point: one frame with a coin or a lens cap for scale.

mapped surface material·Michigan Quaternary geology, mapped on Beaver Island

Coarse-textured glacial till

mapped

Unsorted - clay through boulders, all jumbled, because ice does not sort what it carries. That jumble is the photograph.

Barrier dunes

mapped

Mapped as a critical dune area. Shoot the profile from the beach at low sun so the slope reads, not from the top.

Limestone cobble shore

mapped

MNFI Report 2017-11 calls Monatou Bay on Garden Island the only A-ranked limestone cobble shore in Michigan. Shoot it through a few inches of clear water - a split shot if you have a dome port.

mapped surface material·MNFI natural-community survey

Proglacial outwash

mapped

Meltwater-sorted sand and gravel. Look for it where a cut or a road bank exposes bedded layers.

mapped surface material·Michigan glacial land systems

Bois Blanc Formation (mapped beneath)

mapped

Early Devonian limestone mapped under the island. The archive is explicit that mapping it here does NOT establish exposed bedrock - so this one is a caption on a cobble, not a cliff you can go and find.

mapped surface material·USGS SGMC lithology, via the geology crosswalk

Detroit River Group (mapped beneath)

mapped

Middle Devonian dolostone, also mapped beneath. Same caveat: mapped, not exposed.

Where this comes from

Places are ranked by PageRank over the encyclopedia's link graph, with the bulk-seeded dataset rows excluded so the ranking measures editorial weight rather than a seeding script. Animals come from GBIF public human observations; trees and plants from Michigan DNR forest-inventory stand comments, General Land Office original-survey field notes and Michigan Natural Features Inventory appendices; ground materials from mapped Quaternary geology.

Seasons are computed from each species' own dated records and shown only where there are at least twelve of them, below which a peak month is noise. Mapped bedrock is not exposed bedrock — the geology crosswalk says so itself — so the two bedrock cards say what is mapped underneath rather than sending anyone to look for an outcrop.

Four islands — Gull, Hat, Shoe and Pismire — are in the Michigan Islands National Wildlife Refuge and should be treated as closed. Garden Island holds Anishinaabe burial and ceremonial places that are not photographic subjects at any distance or altitude.
