Summary
Museum Week 2008 ran July 21-26, called “the 28th Museum Week” in that year’s own advance schedule — a count implying, like several other independent tallies across this run, a first year of roughly 1981. A detailed daily schedule and an August recap document the program in full.
Program
Monday: Antje Price opened the Protar Home (1:00-3:00); Music on the Porch began at 7:30 at the Print Shop Museum, with the Historical Society setting up 150 chairs and another 100 patrons bringing their own. Tuesday: Mary Blocksma signed her new book What’s in the Woods on the Print Shop porch; that evening Bruce Struik asked the audience to interpret found natural objects in his interactive “Imagineering” show at the Parish Hall. Wednesday: the Ray Denny Memorial Art Show opened at the Gregg Fellowship Center on Kenwabikise Lane, running through Friday; GLLKA’s Terry Pepper spent the day at the Whiskey Point Light discussing the planned restoration and taking public input, then gave an evening talk on Northwest Michigan lighthouses at the St. James Town Hall. Thursday: Seamus Norgaard presented “The Wisdom of Our Ancestors — Celtic lore from Ireland to Beaver Isle” at the Parish Hall (2:00), and that evening Mike and Gail Weede returned with another episode of “Diving on Beaver Island’s Shipwrecks,” signing a new dive poster featuring the Niko. Friday: Antje Price again at the Protar Home, and Pinky’s “Bing Bang Bong Bingo,” with $1,000 in prizes, at the Parish Hall. Saturday: the kids’ Pet Show, run by Liz and Paul Niehaus, on the Print Shop porch at noon, and Dianna Stampfler’s “Ladies of the Lakes” at the Parish Hall — on female Great Lakes lighthouse keepers, including Beaver Island’s own Elizabeth Whitney Williams, newly enshrined in Michigan’s Women’s Hall of Fame.
The three-day Art Show, “superbly managed by Lois Stipp” with help from Kevin Stipp, Tom Rockwell, Frank Solle, John Crouse, and others, drew over 500 visitors who spent over $5,000 on prints, paintings, and Island-crafted furniture. About 130 people helped stage the week, including the merchants who covered production costs.
Evidence limits
The July schedule explicitly states admission was free throughout, with donations to the Historical Society “appreciated,” consistent with the free- admission policy noted the prior year (2006 and 2007).
