Summary
Museum Week 2007 ran July 16-21, staged in what the Historical Society itself called “its 50th year of operation” (i.e., counting from a roughly 1957 founding, not from Museum Week’s own first year). It is documented by a dedicated July schedule article and a detailed August recap.
Program
The week opened with Skip Duhamel’s Totem-pole Carving demonstration, drawing 60 onlookers (his 2006 demonstration had been cut short by rain). That evening, despite a forecast for rain, over 240 people came to Music on the Porch — held on the Print Shop porch rather than moved to the Parish Hall — featuring Butch Ramsey’s grandkids, the Gerrish Brood, the Community Choir, the Recordoleros, a new group called the Jaunty Sailors, Barry Pischner on sound, and a special closing performance by Martha Guth, direct from the Santa Fe Opera House. Antje Price, “the Protar Lady,” drew almost 100 people to the Protar Home. That evening Mike and Gail Weede told stories of diving Great Lakes shipwrecks, including the Niko (which prompted an audience member, Rod Nackerman, to recall his great-grandmother’s rescue by that ship from the Au Sable fire); BIPOA’s video A Great Lakes Jewel, by filmmaker Barbara Lucas, was shown twice; and Andy Robbins previewed the first segment of a Beaver Island Music radio program he was preparing for fall broadcast. Thursday, despite overcast skies, over 150 people attended Jim Gillingham’s “Amazing Amphibians and Reptiles.” Bingo followed on a later evening.
The Ray Denny Memorial Art Show, held for the first time at the newly built Gregg Fellowship Center at the Christian Church and managed by Lois Stipp, was “the real hit of the week”: 26 artists displayed work, with total sales over $5,400. About 130 people — merchants, artists, musicians, docents, equipment handlers, presenters, and volunteers — helped stage the week.
