Summary
Museum Week 2005 was the Society’s own-declared “25th straight” edition, and it ran on a date changed on short notice: originally announced for July 18-23, it moved to July 11-16 after a rental conflict at Holy Cross Parish Hall, per a February 2005 Beaver Island Forum thread. The celebration extended into a second week of Emerald Isle Repertory Theatre performances, and concluded with the first Beaver Island Celtic Games on July 23 — kept on its original date despite the Museum Week shift.
Program
Monday, July 11: Skip Duhamel carved a totem pole on the Print Shop porch, sponsored by Jeff Connors; that evening, Doris Larson returned as Music on the Porch host after a year’s sabbatical, with Barry Pischner providing sound and thirteen other performers. Tuesday: three GLLKA members and Director Dick Moehl presented a slide show on the Whiskey Point Light restoration; Antje Price opened the Protar Home, sponsored by John Crouse and Maureen Abele; and that evening the Emerald Isle Repertory Theatre opened its run of Anne-Marie Oomen’s Wives of an American King, with Kyle Barnette as Strang and local actresses Melissa Bailey, Hannah Connor, and Karen Whitecraft — timed to the approaching 150th anniversary of Strang’s death. Wednesday: GLLKA volunteers worked on the Whiskey Point Light itself in 90-degree heat and tyvek suits, drawing 75 people to an evening work party; the Ray Denny Memorial Art Show, managed by Laura Pratt, opened at the Christian Church (moved there because of electrical work in the School gym) with artists including Abbe Fogarty, Ted Vassar, Lois Stipp, Kay Masini, Cindy Ricksgers, Tom Siebert, Tom and Vickie Rockwell, Jane Maehr, and Frank Solle. CMU’s three Nature Walks began Wednesday. Friday brought dueling barbershop quartets, including the Beaver Buddies Harmony Club, tracing back to a barbershop group’s chance visit during a Homecoming weekend roughly 25 years earlier. Saturday: the Pet Show at noon on the Print Shop porch, sponsored by Ric Roane, and Antje Price again at the Protar Home. Beaver Head Lighthouse gave guided tours all week. A week later, on July 23, the first Beaver Island Celtic Games drew 400 spectators to the Bud McDonough Ball Diamond for traditional Scottish strength events.
Evidence limits
The Celtic Games are documented here only as the event to which the 25th Museum Week’s own festivities led, per the August recap’s framing (“the celebration … extended over two weeks and concluded with 400 people witnessing the Island’s 1st Celtic Games”); the Games are a related but distinct Historical Society-adjacent fundraiser and are not treated as part of Museum Week’s own program. Open questions
- Was the “25th straight” count self-consistent with the hub’s other independent tallies (1985’s “6th annual,” implying 1980; 2004’s “24th,” implying 1981; 2006’s “26th,” implying 1981)? 2005’s “25th” also implies a first year of 1981, making three of four counts agree on 1981 against 1985’s 1980 — recorded as an open arithmetic question in the hub, not resolved here.
