Summary
Museum Week 2010 ran July 19-24. It was the first Museum Week held under a new Music on the Porch hostess, Kathy Speck, succeeding Doris Larson after her 22-year run ended in 2009. Both a full advance schedule and a detailed recap survive.
Program
Monday: Sheri Richards gave a Suzuki violin demonstration and free lessons at the Community Center (2:00); that evening, Music on the Porch began at 7:30 at the Print Shop under new hostess Kathy Speck, featuring the Community Choir, the Gerrish Gang, Joddy Croswhite (who danced), debutant Kevin Bousquet, Chris Screven on guitar, and the Folksters (Patti Cull, Kevin White, Miranda Rooy, and fiddle teacher Laura Gibson), with Trae McMaken finishing after dark. Tuesday: Antje Price opened the Protar Home (1:00-3:00), and that evening Lee Boisvert, editor of Keewaydinoquay’s writings, spoke at the Community Center about the growing importance of her teaching. Wednesday: an Adult Nature Walk to Little Sand Bay; a visit to Notre Dame archaeologist Dr. Deb Rotman’s dig at the Early farm/Doney house, which over the course of three weeks drew more than 70 visitors and combined archaeology with anthropology across the site’s Mormon, German, and Irish occupation layers; the Art Show opened at Gregg Hall; and ecologists Eric Myers and Seamus Norgaard spoke on Beaver Island’s forests at the Community Center, followed by a new film from Barbara Lucas. Thursday was “Water Day”: a Nature Walk, Ken Bruland’s talk on his solo hundred-mile kayak trip, and Mike and Gail Weede’s story of an 1859 shipwreck whose surviving crew clung to the mast until a morning rescue. Friday brought an investigation of “the roots of Beaver Island’s spirituality,” moderated by Episcopal minister Ted Sirotko, with Strang authority Vickie Speck, Baraga expert Elizabeth Edeline, and Father Dan Connaghan performing in the persona of “Father Peter Gallagher,” Beaver Island’s last “absolute ruler.” Saturday: the Pet Show at noon, and Pinky’s Bingo, added at the last minute by popular demand.
The Art Show drew 500 visitors and $4,600 in sales over its run, including copies of a new book of Jerry LaFreniere’s Island photographs. A Mariachi performance capped the following Sunday as part of a broader summer program.
Evidence limits
The May preview and July schedule largely agree, with the August recap adding attendance figures and quotations not in either advance notice. Venue detail (Print Shop, Community Center, Gregg Hall) is stated explicitly in the July schedule.
