Summary
Museum Week 1995 ran July 17-22. The August Beacon’s recap, written by Lisa Vance Gillespie, calls it “one of the greatest compact-learning-and- entertainment experiences in Northern Michigan” and describes a full week of lectures, walks and demonstrations day by day.
Program
Monday: Music on the Porch, showcasing island musical talent in folk, Irish and other ethnic styles. Tuesday: Antje Price as “The Protar Lady”; a talk by Dennis Clarkson on the planned rehabilitation of the former Dockside Market; and Dave Gladish recounting the Marold ferry explosion, an early Beaver Island disaster that killed five islanders. Wednesday: an Adult Nature Walk; the Protar House open, hosted by Antje Price; Clare Adkin on “High Island and the House of David”; and Shirley Gladish, the Society’s Curator, on “The Mormons” who arrived with Strang. Thursday and Friday mornings: Children’s Nature Walks and Dr. Jim Gillingham’s Reptile Show. Thursday evening: Ray and Carole Rewold on the 18th-century Voyageur explorers and traders, the first white visitors to “Isle du Castor.” Friday: a Pet Show and George Anthony, descendant of the island’s first settlers, speaking on “Beaver Island Indians.” Saturday: Wil and Sarah Reding recreating an 1800s journey from New York State to the Michigan Territory.
Evidence limits
This is the only held Beacon issue mentioning Museum Week for 1995 in the in-repo corpus, so there is no separate advance announcement or later financial recap to cross-check the recap’s dates and program against; all of this article’s detail rests on a single first-person account. The same 1995 August issue also describes a separate parade or “Fleet” of decorated boats and vehicles under the same “MUSEUM WEEK ’95” headline; that material (float and vehicle entries such as Island Airways, the police department, and named “bikers”) reads as a distinct occasion appended to the same page and is not treated here as part of Museum Week’s own program, since the source itself thanks participants “for joining the Fleet” rather than describing a Historical Society event.
Open questions
- What was the relationship, if any, between the “Fleet” parade recorded on the same page and Museum Week itself? It may be an unrelated Fourth of July or Homecoming-season event that happened to run in the same issue.
- No 1996 edition is written in this batch; whether Museum Week 1996 followed directly is not addressed here.
