Summary
The 1994 Beaver Island Museum Week ran July 18-23, built around the Marine Museum’s exhibits and closing with a Pub Concert by the Traverse City folk group “Song of the Lakes.” The September recap calls it “the best in quality and variety of events” but less financially successful than the record 1993 edition.
Program
Standing features continued: Music on the Porch, Nature Walks, Dr. Jim Gillingham’s Reptile Show, and the Protar Home open house. New or returning content included a Beaver Island Native American history talk by Angeline Anthony; a return performance by “the Voyageurs”; a commercial-fishing talk by board member Jim Willis and Jack Cull with fish-tug video; a talk on herbal remedies by Keewaydinoquay Peschel; author Henry Hill discussing and signing “Tales from the Other End of the Island”; a House of David lecture by Clare Adkin; a lighthouses talk by Floss Frank, drawn from her forthcoming Volume IV chapter; the Children’s Pet Show; two CMU adult nature walks with Dr. Gillingham (Dunes or Bogs, offered at the same time so attendees had to choose); a new 9-hole golf-tournament scramble organized by Glen Wagner; and the “Song of the Lakes” Pub Concert, organized by Gerry LaFreniere. Paul Nelson separately donated a color television and VCR to the Marine Museum that season for showing a “Commercial Fishing out of Beaver Island” video.
Evidence limits
The July preview describes planned events; the September recap confirms the week occurred and was well received in quality but gives no dollar total, only a comparative statement that it fell short of 1993’s financial result. Whether both Dunes and Bogs nature walks ran as separately scheduled, or one was cancelled for lack of a leader, is not confirmed.
Open questions
- What was 1994’s actual Museum Week revenue, and how far short of 1993’s record did it fall? The September notice gives no figure.
