Summary
Museum Week 2000 ran July 17-22, called “the Twentieth Museum Week” in the Historical Society’s own September annual-meeting report — a fourth independent editorial count, alongside 1985’s “6th annual,” 2004’s “24th consecutive,” and 2006’s “26th,” and one that likewise implies a first year around 1980-1981.
Program
Monday, July 17: “Music on the Porch,” featuring Antje Price speaking on Feodor Protar “on this 75th anniversary of his death” (placing Protar’s death in 1925), John Leben discussing his “King of Beaver Island” video (freshly funded by another Michigan Humanities Council grant), and Don Meister on “the meaning of Kee’s life” (Keewaydinoquay). Youth activities that week included an Art Show at the B.I. School (Wednesday-Saturday), CMU Nature Walks, a Reptile Show at Holy Cross Hall (Thursday 2:00), and a Pet Show at the Print Shop Museum (Saturday 1:00). The Ceili Dancers gave a repeat free class Saturday (July 22) afternoon. Historian Paul Connors, who had spoken for the Charlevoix Historical Society on July 11, repeated his talk on Friday evening of Museum Week. Once again all costs were covered by Island merchants, letting the week continue as a fundraiser for the Historical Society; the July preview names over a dozen underwriting businesses.
Evidence limits
The September annual-meeting recap notes some events were “under-attended” even though the week was “very profitable” overall — a rare instance of an uneven year being recorded candidly rather than only celebrated. The “75th anniversary” reference for Protar’s death (implying 1925) is the source’s own dating and is not independently checked here.
Open questions
- What “meaning” did Don Meister draw from “Kee’s life” in his talk? The source names the topic without summarizing the content.
- Which specific events were under-attended in 2000? The annual-meeting report does not specify.
