Summary
Museum Week 2002 ran July 15-20. A July schedule notice and a detailed August recap together give one of the fuller accounts of a single Museum Week’s evening program, naming specific musicians for Music on the Porch for the first time in this held run of years.
Program
Monday night’s Music on the Porch, held on a rare rain-free night after “several stormy years,” opened with Glen Hendrix playing Irish jigs, followed by Signe Thomas tap-dancing, Island troubadour Barry Pischner (who performed his own song about the Bradley, printed in the new Volume 5 of the Journal of Beaver Island History), the four-woman group Northern Lights (Mary Kay McPherson, Wendy White, Patty Cull, and Nancy Butler), and the Community Choir, coached by Kathy Speck. Antje Price opened the Protar Home two afternoons, donated a door prize for the Art Show, and showed slides from fifty years of her own Island photography. CMU ran its regular Nature Walk schedule plus three additional walks with proceeds going to the Historical Society; Jim Gillingham’s “Amazing Amphibians and Reptiles” was again the most popular presentation. Wednesday brought two related talks: John Lorenzen in the afternoon on parallels between Celtic culture and Native American life, and Andrew Jacob that evening presenting his research on Beaver Island’s stone circles, including a configuration he interpreted as mirroring the constellation Virgo. Robert Cole’s continuing Oral History project featured a recorded story from Earl Gallagher about Prohibition-era moonshining. The Ray Denny Memorial Art Show and the Pet Show (a dozen pets won certificates) were both held successfully, and the week drew old-time Islanders and descendants — Culls, O’Donnells, Strang descendants, and a visitor from San Jose tracing her family to Agnes Bird’s sister.

The named merchant donor list in the August recap (the Emerald Isle Hotel, the Bluebird, Haggards, McDonough’s, and others) is recorded here only as evidence the week continued to be merchant-funded, consistent with prior and later years, not as an exhaustive account of all support.
