Summary

Beaver Island’s own record of itself runs through one institution: the Beaver Island Historical Society (BIHS), which since the 1950s has collected, housed and interpreted the island’s history at two museums, a restored home, and a grave enclosure. Its evidentiary weight is uneven by design — a historical society’s newsletter is a strong source for what the society did, and a weaker one for whether a claim it repeats is true. The clearest instance in the held record is the 1988 report of a 397-foot stone circle on the island’s west side: a newspaper account, an appeal for study funds, and an editorial calling for protection, with no independent archaeological confirmation found. A different kind of evidence comes from outside the island’s own institutions — National Register listings and university archaeological fieldwork — and this article keeps that distinction visible throughout: what BIHS or a later heritage group says about itself, and what a federal record or a professional excavation independently establishes.

The Historical Society and its sites

BIHS’s own founding date is unsettled between two of its own sources. A September 1955 Beaver Beacon article, “Beaver Island Historical Society Is Formed,” reports the Society’s organization, cooperation with the Beaver Island Civic Association, and R. P. Hoffman and A. J. Roy’s purchase of the building that became its headquarters. A federal nonprofit registration for “Beaver Island Historical Society of Michigan” instead gives 1957 as the founding year, a figure the August 2006 Beacon corroborates by calling that year’s Museum Week the Society’s “49th year.” Both dates are BIHS’s own institutional record, two years apart, and nothing in the held corpus resolves which one is the Society’s actual founding.

By 2023 BIHS operated two museums — the Print Shop Museum and the Marine Museum — and maintained two further historic sites, Heritage Park and Protar’s House, staffed substantially by volunteers. The Mormon Print Shop, built in 1850 for James Strang’s royal press and the Northern Islander, was ransacked in the 1856 expulsion of the Strangites, later became a boardinghouse, and by 1964 was the subject of a Society campaign to retire its mortgage and receive the deed; it carries National Register reference 71000386, certified 25 January 1971. The Marine Museum occupies a restored harbor net shed identified in 1976 as the former Martin net shed, opened for public inspection on 4 July 1976 as a Bicentennial project with planned displays of fishing, freight and passenger-boat artifacts; further interior work remained unfinished that September, and no later record of its completion is held here. Heritage Park, named for A. J. and the late Mabel Roy, followed a 1975 township land lease, survey and sign. None of these four sites has a title, deed, or accession register held here; what is held are BIHS’s own newspaper-era progress reports.

A near-loss: the 1980 fire

The Print Shop Museum’s closest recorded call came not from neglect or funding failure but from a neighbor’s house fire. On the evening of March 12, 1980, a rented house on the harbor across the street from the Museum caught fire; a wind off the harbor fanned burning debris across the street, and sparks caught under the Museum’s porch. The April 1980 Beacon reports that firefighters and volunteers, finding flames already “licking through the floor boards,” went in the front door, cut a hole in it, and put the fire out underneath — with the 130-year-old building, “made up of very dry wood beams and siding,” minutes from what the Society’s own account called becoming “a huge, open blaze.” The neighboring house burned to the ground; the Print Shop and two other adjacent structures survived. BIHS’s own contemporaneous notice, headed “MUSEUM SAVED!”, reported the loss as confined to “some floor boards,” with structural repairs, new fire extinguishers, and a planned emergency door completed before the season opened; its November 1980 annual report still listed a proposed fireproof enclosure around the porch base as an “urgent priority” left undone. On the sourced record this was an ad hoc volunteer response to an external fire that reached the building, not a funded preservation project or an engineered fire-suppression success — see Harbor-block fire destroys the Harmon house but the Print Shop Museum is saved, 1980 for the full account, including what the source does and does not establish about the fire’s cause and the completeness of the repairs.

Preservation campaigns, one clearly outcome-linked and one not

A 1970 campaign for Feodor Protar’s cabin illustrates both the record’s strength and its limit. The June-July 1970 Beacon reports that A. J. Roy and Eunice Hendrix carried the cabin and the older Bonner farm across the road to the state Historic Preservation Advisory Council, seeking documentation for a proposed National Register listing and matching restoration funds. The cabin was in fact listed — reference 72000604, certified 16 March 1972 — and its nomination material is dated November 1971. That sequence confirms an outcome; it does not, on the held record, prove the 1970 campaign caused the listing or secured matching funds, since no grant record or nomination correspondence naming the 1970 campaigners survives here. The Bonner farm across the road carries no NRHP reference at all in the held federal layer.

The 1988-89 stone-circle episode is a preservation campaign whose outcome is not established here. The June 1988 Beacon reports Terri Busse’s 1985 recognition of a roughly 397-foot stone circle on the island’s west side, with a marked central boulder and nearby features the article calls medicine wheels and garden remnants; the same issue carries the Society’s appeal for funds to support a planned University of Michigan investigation by Professor Earl Prahle and to guide relocation of a proposed development road. The August 1988 issue adds that the stones were being chipped and defaced, and the Society hoped for state DNR protection. A year later, in August 1989, the Beacon ran an editorial headed “STONE CIRCLES MUST BE PROTECTED.” No held source after 1989 reports Prahle’s investigation taking place, a DNR protective designation, or any archaeological finding about the circle’s age, purpose or cultural attribution. The claim should be read exactly as it was published: a newspaper report of a local recognition and an advocacy campaign, not a settled archaeological fact.

Archaeology: newspaper report against fieldwork

The stone-circle case and the University of Notre Dame Irish Stories project sit at opposite ends of the same subject. Notre Dame’s technical reports document professionally conducted excavation: eleven one-square-meter units at the Peter Doney Gallagher Homestead (site 20CX201) across two field seasons, 5-22 July 2010 and 6-21 July 2011, and eleven further units totaling 11 m² at the Dan and Catherine Boyle Farm Site (20CX204), 15-20 July 2012, sampling midden deposits around a former cellar. These reports are held directly here and describe processing and custody arrangements for recovered material. Even so, they do not establish land title, complete family descent, or a final artifact interpretation — the same caution the project’s own authors state. The contrast with the stone circle is not that one claim is true and the other false; it is that one rests on a controlled excavation with a technical report, and the other rests on a newspaper account of a private recognition that no later source found confirms or disproves.

Any archaeological or burial-related feature attributed to Native American presence — as the 1988 reporting speculates about the stone circle without naming a specific nation or period — is outside what can be established here. Questions of cultural affiliation or the location of a sensitive site belong with the appropriate tribal historic preservation office, not with a newspaper clipping or this article.

Museum Week and heritage tourism

Museum Week is BIHS’s annual July programme — music, lectures, nature walks, an art show, a pet show, and open houses at its sites — and, on the held evidence, the island’s longest-running annually named cultural festival still operating. No held source states a founding year outright; the earliest mention is a passing one in August 1980, and three later annual counts (a “6th annual” in 1985, a “10th annual” for one component in 1989, a “24th consecutive” in 2004) imply a first year of roughly 1980 or 1981 without agreeing on which. Its venues have shifted over four decades — Holy Cross Parish Hall for evening programs, an Art Show that moved from the Island Gallery to the Community School gym and later to Gregg Fellowship Hall — and its own organizers describe a deliberate scheduling relationship with the Beaver Island Music Festival to extend visitor stays, an economic-tourism claim attributed to those organizers and not adopted here as an independent finding.

A newer instrument of public memory runs alongside BIHS’s museums: the Beaver Island Irish Heritage Group (BIIHG), incorporated in November 2023, stages the annual Emerald Isle Irish Féile each September and, since 2023, has run “Calling of the Clans,” a fundraising competition among thirteen named historic Beaver Island Irish families. The April 2024 Northern Islander reports the 2024 round raised approximately $28,000 from 170 donors, following a 2023 round that raised over $30,000 from ten participating families — donation totals framed explicitly as inter-family competition, a form of public memory that turns descent from the island’s Irish settlers into an active, publicly scored identity. The island’s twinning with Arranmore, County Donegal predates BIIHG: a first celebration on 7 October 2000 brought an Arranmore delegation to a Holy Cross Parish Hall gathering, museum tours, and the dedication of Arranmore Park, formalizing a family connection rooted in nineteenth-century emigration as a modern civic relationship. A March 2003 notice scheduled a reciprocal visit to Arranmore; no held source confirms it occurred as planned.

The institution-as-source problem

This subject is unusual in that its principal sources are largely the remembering institutions’ own accounts of themselves. BIHS’s website is a strong source for what BIHS currently says and does — its four historic sites, its Museum Week programming — and a weak one for underlying biographical claims it repeats without citation. The clearest example is Feodor Protar’s grave-enclosure plaque, “our heaven-sent friend”: the phrase appears in the held corpus only on BIHS’s own website page about Protar’s home, and nowhere in the newspaper corpus, the National Register nomination, or any other independently held source. The epithet may well be accurate — it is exactly the kind of local tradition a historical society is positioned to preserve — but its only sourcing here is the Society’s self-description alone, not a dated primary attestation. The stone circle is the same pattern in a more consequential register: a claim originating with a private individual, amplified by a Society fundraising appeal and a newspaper editorial, with no subsequent independent verification held here. Both cases call for the same discipline: report what the institution says, attribute it clearly, and do not convert an institutional claim into an established fact because it has been repeated for decades.

Open questions
