Summary

The 1981 Beaver Island Museum Week ran July 20-25, the second year the Beaver Island Historical Society is documented holding it. The May 1981 Beacon announced the dates and program; the July issue confirms it took place, reporting “a happy and successful museum week,” and the Sweet Adelines’ own note independently confirms they sang on the Museum’s porch on the opening evening, Monday, July 20.

Program

Per the May announcement: a privately made movie of old-time Beaver Island, a lecture on the island’s beach plants, an Open House at the Protar Home, a “special day” at the Marine Museum, daily craft demonstrations on the Print Shop’s front porch, and a week-long book sale (a repeat of the “great success” of 1980’s book sale, run again with help from Mary Minor). The Sweet Adelines sang on the Museum porch the opening Monday evening, July 20 — their second consecutive year performing at the pageant circuit and their first documented Museum Week appearance.

Evidence limits

The February 1981 notice looking back on “last summer’s successful afternoons on the Museum porch” is the clearest documented link between the 1980 and 1981 programs, though it does not itself describe 1981’s own schedule. No attendance or financial total specific to 1981 survives in the held record; the July recap is a short, general note rather than a detailed program report.

Open questions

  • Did the movie showing, beach-plants lecture, Protar Home open house and Marine Museum day occur exactly as announced in May, or were any changed or cancelled? No follow-up program-by-program report survives.
