Summary

Beaver Island Grade and High School was the island’s single public school for grades 1 through 12, run by a local Board of Education and taught almost entirely by Dominican Sisters through this 1956–1978 period. The Beaver Beacon also called the same school “Beaver Island Community School” and “Beaver Island Community High School” throughout — the two names were used interchangeably in the newspaper for one continuing institution, not for a sequence of different schools. Enrollment grew from about 69 pupils in 1957 to an all-time high of 78 in 1968; the school building was enlarged twice, in 1956–57 and 1966; and graduating classes ranged from two students in 1963 to ten in 1978, all at Holy Cross Catholic Church.

History

The Beaver Beacon reports a Board of Education-run school on Beaver Island from at least 1956, staffed by Dominican Sisters and serving grades 1 through 12 in one building near St. James. The June 1956 issue names four graduates of “Beaver Island Community School” — Rosemary McDonough, Thelma Schmidt, Roland Cull, and Hubert McCauley — at commencement exercises held June 1 in the parish hall, with Charles A. Robinson presenting diplomas.1 That September the Beacon reported bids would soon be taken for a school addition with a kitchen, heating plant, and classroom space; the existing building’s lower floor and roof had already been repaired. The school board, meeting in Charlevoix on September 20, rejected every bid submitted. By July 1957 contractor Ivan Philips of Charlevoix was on the island ready to build, and the November 1957 issue reported the completed addition — one large classroom, a kitchen, restrooms, and a furnace room — alongside enrollment of 46 grade-school and 23 high-school pupils.

Robinson served as superintendent of the Beaver Island School District; the September 1972 Beacon reported his retirement after twenty-three years, succeeded by James Shepard. Joseph McDonough was president of the Board of Education by 1963. A full 1971 roster survives: Philip Gregg as board president, Madonna McCafferty as secretary, Marion Martin as treasurer, and trustees Rita Gillespie, Grace Nackerman, Edna (“Skip”) McDonough, and Russell Green. In September 1972 the board revised its student dress code, resolved that nonresident students would not be accepted in the district, and appointed Lawrence McDonough to a vacancy left by Mrs. Frank Nackerman’s resignation after eleven years of service.

Dominican Sisters staffed the school throughout the period documented here. Sister Euphrosine and Sister Karen joined for the high school and grade school respectively when the school reopened on September 6, 1960, with 47 grade-school pupils (22 in grades 1–4, 25 in grades 5–8) and 9 high-school students. By 1966 the faculty was Sister Kenneth Marie, Sister Wilma, Sister Florian, and Sister Julia Mae, all O.P.; that October the Beacon described the school as “one of the few public schools in the country operated by Catholic Sisters, all of whom are college trained and state licensed,” adding that the island’s remoteness had made it impossible for the Board of Education to attract lay teachers.2 Staff turned over regularly afterward — Sister Margaret Spellman left in December 1971 after eighteen months teaching grades 1–4, replaced by Sister Catherine Anderson, an Aquinas College graduate — and by September 1972 the faculty was Sister Rita Wenzlick as principal and high-school teacher, with Sister Agatha Arman, Sister Mary Jane Halsey, and Sister Catherine Anderson. The parish priest, Reverend Herbert Graf, also taught classical language and organized physical education in 1971.

Enrollment climbed with the island’s population: 68 pupils in both 1970 and 1971; 75 in fall 1966, up from 57 the year before and attributed to five families moving to the island; an all-time high of 78 in September 1968; and 66 (37 elementary, 29 high school) at the September 1972 opening. Voters approved a $62,000 bond issue by 46 to 2 on January 10, 1966,3 for two classrooms and a multipurpose room and to remodel existing space for the high school; the addition, built by the Don Nelson Construction Company of Detroit, also added a principal’s office and was nearing completion by October 1966. Schoolchildren lettered “BEAVER ISLAND SCHOOL” onto the building in June 1960.

Graduation exercises were consistently held at Holy Cross Church, with the school closing for the summer at the end of May or in early June. Six students graduated in 1960 — Mary Gallagher (valedictorian), Anne Gatliff, Darlene Schmidt (salutatorian), Joseph LaFreniere, Alvin LaFreniere, and Charles Dudley — after a junior-senior banquet at the Beaver Lodge. The 1963 class held two graduates, Carol Ann O’Donnell and Evelyn Palmer, the smallest recorded; Superintendent Robinson and board president McDonough both spoke at the class banquet. The Dominican Sisters’ departure each June for the summer, and the school’s routine closing until September, was itself reported as news — the June 1964 issue printed “the last Honor Roll for the year” alongside notice of the closing. By June 1978, ten students graduated at Holy Cross Church, three with high honors, addressed by architect Zak Gerganoff.

Names

The Beaver Beacon used at least three labels for what its own reporting describes as one school. “Beaver Island Grade and High School” appears as the heading of a printed honor roll on March 4, 1960.4 “Beaver Island Community School” or “Beaver Island Community High School” appears in the Beacon as early as June 1956 — four years before that “Grade and High School” heading — and continues through at least 1978 in the sources held here, and into the present in the 2024–25 federal directory for Beaver Island Community School. A February 1961 business directory in the Beacon lists the school simply as “B I Community School.” Every one of these labels describes the same K–12 school under the same Board of Education and superintendent — Charles A. Robinson, in office by 1956 and retiring in 1972 after twenty-three years — with no indication of a formal renaming or succession. This article therefore leaves former_names empty: neither name was superseded, and both were used concurrently for decades.

What the sources held here do not establish is a documented, unbroken legal or corporate line from this Board of Education-run school to the present-day Beaver Island Community School district; that article notes the same limit from its own, later sources.

Significance

The October 1966 Beacon’s own description — that the school was “one of the few public schools in the country operated by Catholic Sisters, all of whom are college trained and state licensed” — is the only claim of distinctiveness the held sources make; it is repeated here as the newspaper’s framing, not an added judgment. The same report ties the arrangement to the island’s isolation, which it says had made hiring lay teachers impossible.

Open questions

  • Is there a documented legal or corporate link between this school and the present-day Beaver Island Community School district, beyond continuity of the “Community School” name in the Beacon?
  • What building, board-minute, or state records exist for the school before 1956, including any relationship to the “Little Red School” and Roosevelt School referenced in a 2003 retrospective (Roosevelt School)?
  • Complete faculty and school-board rosters, and a full enrollment and graduation series, are not held here beyond the individual Beacon notices cited.
