History

The December 1960 Beaver Beacon “School News” column names Emmett Martin as the winner of the prize for the best Clipper Ship drawing, with no grade or further school record supplied. Fourteen months later, the February 1962 Beacon’s “Cold Coyote” item names Emmet Martin as one of fourteen-year-old twins involved in the reported coyote encounter, consistent with a birth year of about 1947.

Significance

A brief, twice-documented episode from an islander’s childhood, kept as a combined record because both notices independently identify the same boy.

Evidence and limits

The 1960 school-prize winner and the 1962 coyote-encounter twin are the same boy. Both notices share the unusual given name “Emmet(t),” the same island setting, and an approximate 1947 birth year consistent between them; later Beacon reporting identifies Emmet and his twin, Ernie, as sons of Charlie Martin, and the Holy Cross Cemetery index independently lists Daniel Emmett “Emmet” Martin (1947–2007), child of Charles and Marion McGinnis Martin — the same span of years and the same father’s name as the Beacon’s “Charlie Martin.” No source gives a full birth date; 1947 is derived from the printed age in the 1962 notice and corroborated by the cemetery index.
