The earliest held island reference is a one-line November 1958 Beacon item: a clinic caseworker named Robert Gillespie “spoke before a group of women in the school” on October 15. Two years later, the October 1960 Beacon reported a fuller visit by the clinic’s psychologist, Mary Scovill, who spent a Thursday evening talking with mothers at a gathering at Beaver Lodge and the following Friday administering psychological tests to island schoolchildren, explicitly “to help the teachers” rather than to treat individual children. The same October 1960 item is the source for the clinic’s institutional description carried in this article: founded in 1951 by the State Department of Mental Health, one of 18 such clinics in Michigan, supported in part by the five counties it served, with three state-paid professional staff, a locally paid stenographer-receptionist and office rent in Petoskey’s Penney Building, Robert Gillespie as Director by that date, and monthly psychiatric consultation from Dr. Norman Westlund of the Saginaw Clinic. The 1958 and 1960 visits name the same Robert Gillespie, suggesting continuity of the working relationship with the island school over at least those two years, though no held source states his title in 1958 or records any visit before or after this pair.

Sibilio, Director of the Petoskey Child Guidance Clinic” was reviewed and rejected for this article: it describes a mainland panel discussion at the Petoskey Central School Auditorium and has no connection to Beaver Island. Likewise excluded is general Petoskey-area and county coverage of the clinic’s funding, board elections, and directors found elsewhere in the held newspaper corpus — it documents the clinic’s mainland operations, not any tie to this archipelago, and including it here would be fabrication by association. The Robert Gillespie named as the clinic’s caseworker and later Director is not assumed to be related to any Beaver Island resident of the same surname recorded elsewhere in this knowledge base; no source establishes such a connection.
