Summary
Mary Elizabeth Gallagher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Gallagher of St. James, appears on the Beaver Island School honor roll every year from February 1957 through her valedictory address at the May 24, 1960 graduation, where she led a class of six with an average of 2.66 out of a possible 3.12345 A July 1960 scholarship notice reports her plan to attend North Central College in Petoskey to become an elementary teacher;6 the Beacon continues to trace her — by full name and, from 1963, by her parents’ names — through college, a first teaching post in Charlevoix, and her 1966 marriage to Donald Eugene Heilig of Charlevoix.78910
History
Mary Gallagher was named on the island school’s honor roll in February 1957,1 December 1958,2 and February 1959,3 each time as an upperclassman, before being announced valedictorian of the senior class with a 2.66 average in February 1960; Darlene Schmidt was salutatorian, with a 2.21 average.4 She was listed among the graduates preparing for the April 28 Junior-Senior Banquet at the Beaver Lodge and the planned May 24 graduation.11 The class of six — Gallagher, Schmidt, Anne Gatliff, Joseph LaFreniere, Alvin LaFreniere, and Charles Dudley — received diplomas at Holy Cross Church on May 24, 1960.5 That July, the Beacon reported Mary Elizabeth Gallagher receiving a Northern Michigan Jobbers Association Scholarship and planning to attend North Central College in Petoskey to train as an elementary teacher.6
By October 1962 she had finished two years in Petoskey and enrolled at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.7 Community columns recorded her home visits over the following two years — during the 1962–63 holidays and mid-semester breaks in February 1963 and February 1964, and over Easter 1964 — each time identifying her, from 1963 on, as the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Gallagher, alongside a running item that also tracked Colleen Nackerman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Nackerman, on a parallel college path.12131415 In May 1964 the Beacon reported her student teaching at Vine Street School in Kalamazoo during her senior year at Western Michigan University, again identifying her as a Beaver Island High School graduate and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Gallagher of St. James, and stated she would enter 4th-grade teaching in the Charlevoix school system that fall.8 She graduated from Western Michigan University on June 6, 1964; her parents and brother Arthur attended the ceremony in Kalamazoo.9 The following September, the Beacon confirmed she had begun teaching 4th grade in the Charlevoix Public Schools.16
A bridal shower was held for her on May 27, 1966, at the home of Grace Nackerman; about 40 women attended.17 On June 11, 1966, “Mary Elizabeth Gallagher of Charlevoix” married Donald Eugene Heilig of Charlevoix in a double-ring ceremony at St. Mary’s Church.10 By February 1973 the Beacon reported the birth of the couple’s third daughter, Mary Beth, to “Mr. and Mrs. Donald Heilig (Mary Elizabeth Gallagher) of Grand Haven,” with Mr. and Mrs. John A. Gallagher again named as the proud grandparents — the last appearance of this Mary Gallagher held in this research.18
Evidence and limits
The 1957–1973 sequence traced here rests on repeated, specific corroboration — the parents’ names “Mr. and Mrs. John A. Gallagher of St. James,” the Beaver Island High School graduation, and the stated teaching career reported before and after it happened — not on the surname alone. “Mary Gallagher” and “Mary Elizabeth Gallagher” are common names on Beaver Island and in the wider Gallagher family network, and this research identified two distinct, unrelated women who share the name and appear in the same held corpus: an 83-year-old Mary Elizabeth Gallagher (born Duffy in Arranmore, Ireland, in 1887, who married William John Gallagher in 1912 and died in 1971), and a 94-year-old Mary Elizabeth Gallagher of Traverse City and formerly Chicago who died of cancer in 2004. Neither is connected to the valedictorian traced here. A third, older Mary Gallagher — Mary Eleanor Gallagher — married William G. McDonough in Charlevoix in July 1959 and moved to Grand Rapids; a bride settled off-island by mid-1959 cannot be the same person recorded on the island’s honor roll every year through June 1960, so that record is also kept distinct.19
Open questions
- Did Mary Elizabeth (Gallagher) Heilig continue teaching after her 1966 marriage, or after her children were born?
- No source read for this article gives her birth date or later life beyond the February 1973 birth notice.
