Summary
The March 1975 Beaver Beacon publishes the Beaver Island Bicentennial Committee’s proposed program and fundraising appeal. The list assigns ecology study to Central Michigan University, a pageant to the school, a festival and brochure to the Civic Association, restorations to the Historical Society, a commemorative book to the Planning Commission, a bicycle route to the Businessmen’s Association, church histories to Holy Cross, Beaver Island Christian, and the Episcopal Mission, and fishing, nautical, and Indian history to special committees.
The proposal also calls for preservation of historic structures, collection and copying of documents, maps, and photographs, an oral-history project involving high-school students, a multimedia documentary, pamphlets, and a marked bicycle tour. It sets a $42,000 goal and appeals for donations toward State matching funds.
Evidence and limits
This is a public proposal and communication artifact, not a grant award, budget, completed restoration, documentary, publication, oral-history corpus, or completed bicycle route. The source’s inconsistent “Protector/Proctor” wording is retained as a textual uncertainty and is not silently equated with the existing Protar cabin record.
Sources
- Publishes a proposal listing ecology study, school pageant, Civic Association festival, Historical Society restorations, commemorative book, brochure, bicycle route, church histories, fishing and nautical history, Indian history and influence, document and photograph collection, oral history by high-school students, a multimedia documentary, and pamphlets. It says the State could provide matching funds, sets a $42,000 goal, and includes a contribution and pledge form. The repeated ad has minor text differences, including “Protector” and “Proctor” spellings for one proposed home; this record preserves that uncertainty rather than identifying it as Protar.
