Summary

Central Michigan University’s Beaver Island Biological Station is a field station of the university’s Biology Department, first attested under that name in a February 1967 grant notice and continuously documented in the Beaver Beacon into the 2000s. It grew out of the university’s 1959-1960 Sand Bay building program — see Central Michigan University (1959-1960 Sand Bay founding) for that earlier, differently named phase – and by the late 1960s was running federally funded teacher institutes, summer field-science courses across biology, fisheries, entomology, mycology, ornithology, and herpetology, applied wildlife research, and an annual public closing party that drew much of the island. Under director James Gillingham, in place by 1986, the station also became a source islanders and officials consulted on coyotes, wetlands, and fish stocking.

History

The earliest held use of “Biological Station” is the February 1967 Beacon, reporting a $44,940 grant for a Summer Institute of Biology for Secondary School Teachers, directed by Dr. Matthew H. Hohn of the CMU Biology Department, enrollment capped at 32.1 Three years earlier, in May 1964, the paper had reported construction of a 24-by-48-foot laboratory building for summer use; in August 1965 four CMU summer researchers were stranded overnight on Hog Island when high winds drove their 16-foot boat ashore, and CMU’s own vessel Chippawa helped find them.

By 1971 the program was substantial enough to host an eight-week National Science Foundation institute for about 35 high-school biology teachers, beginning June 21: aquatic biology courses in limnology, freshwater algae, and aquatic zoology, an avian ethology course under ornithologist Dr. Cuthbert, and independent student projects that included coyote observation and a request that anglers at Barney’s Lake record the fish they caught.2 A February 1970 scholarship notice had already tied the university’s gift explicitly to “the island’s relationship with the University’s Biological Station” — the clearest held statement that islanders and the Beacon already understood the program by that name.

Through the 1970s the station published detailed summer schedules — 1975 ran nature study, ecology, fishery biology, entomology, and mycology from May 19 to August 22; 1977 added field botany, herpetology, environmental education, and, alongside the science, ceramics; 1978 ran biology, nature photography, astronomy, chemistry, and geology through athletic training. A May 1977 notice calls the same summer program the “Island Center,” the only held source to use that name. In March 1975 the station was named the proposed sponsor of a Beaver Island Bicentennial ecology study, one of six projects the island’s Bicentennial Committee proposed; no source read confirms the study was completed. An “established as an annual event” Close the Center Party, hosted by station staff with a buffet and square dancing open to the island, is recorded on October 25, 1975, and recurs in the record through 1978, 1983, 1985, 1986, and 1989. Research and public programming continued alongside the courses: Alice Loesch’s 1977 account of a tree-defoliator outbreak, continued smallmouth-bass tagging around Garden Island reported in 1984, and a 1985 call for anglers to report jaw-tagged fish for a growth study.

James Gillingham, a University of Oklahoma-trained herpetologist at CMU since 1976, is first recorded as station director in July 1986, when the Beacon published his defense of the island’s coyotes as a benign part of the deer herd’s ecology rather than a threat to it.3 Under his direction the station announced one- to three-week 1986 courses spanning natural history and creative activities, and in May 1989 thirty CMU Industrial Education and Technology students erected, from island lumber, a new building Gillingham had designed: four laboratories, a controlled collections room, conference space, and a boat-access basement.4 Through the early 1990s Gillingham and station colleagues were repeatedly consulted in the Beacon’s pages on island wetlands, a proposed walleye stocking near loon habitat, and cormorant control; an April 1994 editor’s note identifies him as “Director of the CMU-BI Biological Station.”

The station’s public-facing programming continued into the next decade. Held Beacon pages record a roughly 200-person season-closing party in November 2002, and announced public nature-walk and field-trip schedules for 2003 and 2004 run in partnership with the Beaver Island Historical Society, with 2004 registration directed through the Mormon Print Shop. By November 2007 the Beacon was reporting concerts at “CMU’s new Gillingham Auditorium,” which went on to host Baroque on Beaver small-ensemble evenings from 2008. No source read here establishes whether the auditorium’s name commemorates James Gillingham; the survey of organized performance on the island separately notes that the auditorium has no article of its own.

Evidence and limits

These records establish dated programs, named leadership from 1986, and sustained public activity, but not a founding instrument, a site boundary, a complete staffing history, a course catalogue, or a research-output record. The relationship to the 1959-1960 Sand Bay/Conference House program is one of continuity in the Beacon’s own coverage, not a documented formal succession — no source read states that the 1959 building became this station’s campus, only that the same university department kept a Beaver Island field program running under shifting names.

Significance

For four decades the station was the island’s most consistent conduit to outside science and to Central Michigan University as an institution: it brought federally funded teacher training, applied fisheries and wildlife research some of which fed into township and state decisions, and a recurring seasonal population whose annual closing party drew islanders as guests. Its director from at least 1986 was a public voice on the island’s wildlife and land-use disputes, cited in the Beacon on subjects from coyotes to wetlands to cormorants.

Open questions

  • Whether the 1959 Sand Bay building is the same structure that hosted the 1967 Institute, or was replaced by the 1964 laboratory and 1989 building, is not established.
  • Who directed the station between 1967 (Hohn) and 1986 (Gillingham)?
  • Does “Gillingham Auditorium,” first named in the record in 2007, commemorate James Gillingham? No source read here says so, and no separate article describes the auditorium.
  • What ended, or is still continuing, the station’s public nature-walk programming documented through 2004?
