Summary

Anne (Gatliff) Kurth (1942–2012) was a Beaver Island High School graduate whose recovery from a serious automobile accident, sustained as a teenager in September 1959, was reported in the Beaver Beacon across more than a year of hospital notices before she married Bayard Karl Kurth in 1963. One of at least ten Gatliff siblings, she raised two sons in the Detroit area — by 1982 at Harper Woods — while the Beacon continued to record her name through her siblings’ obituaries into 2010, two years before her own death.

History

Accident and recovery, 1959–1961

The Beacon’s December 1960 hospital column dates the injury: Ann Gatliff was to enter Little Traverse Hospital on December 15, 1960, “for surgery on the arm and leg that were so badly broken in the car accident a year ago Sept. 30th” — placing the accident on 30 September 1959.1 By January 1960 she had been released from Little Traverse Hospital in Petoskey but remained under observation, staying at an off-island Petoskey address rather than returning home.2 On January 16, 1960, a benefit party was held in Chicago for “Ann Gatliff and Darlene Schmidt,” her classmate, with a Beaver Island venison and ham dinner served to a reported good turnout.3 She returned to school part-time — “half day session” — that April, and by the end of the month attended the Junior-Senior Banquet at the Beaver Lodge with her class.45 Gatliff graduated with five classmates — Mary Gallagher, Darlene Schmidt, Joseph LaFreniere, Alvin LaFreniere, and Charles Dudley — at ceremonies held in Holy Cross Church on 24 May 1960.6 Treatment continued afterward: the December 1960 surgery on her arm and leg was followed by a March 1961 course of skin grafts at Little Traverse Hospital, tied by the Beacon to ankle surgery for the same 1959 injury.7

Marriage and later life

The engagement of “Miss Anne Gatliff” to Bayard Karl Kurth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bayard Kurth of Grosse Pointe, was announced in the Beacon that June, with a September wedding planned.8 Miss Ann Gatliff, “daughter of Mrs. Thomas Gatliff and the late Mr. Gatliff,” in fact married Kurth at St. Ambrose Church in Detroit on 20 July 1963; the couple traveled through northern Michigan and spent several days on Beaver Island before returning to Detroit.9 The Beacon’s birth notices then record two sons: Baynard Karl Kurth IV, born in Detroit in February 1964, and a second son born October 10, 1966, each announced as belonging to “Mr. and Mrs. Bayard Kurth” with “Mrs. Kurth” identified as “the former Ann Gatliff,” and Mary Gatliff named as grandmother both times.1011 A March 2004 “Forty Years Ago” retrospective, recalling the 1964 birth notice, adds that the son was, as of 2004, “still a regular visitor to his property near Dannyville on the West Side” — the only held source connecting that son to the family’s continuing presence on the island four decades later.12

Ann Kurth was one of at least ten Gatliff children of Mary (Tom) Gatliff. Her siblings’ own Beacon obituaries repeatedly place her off-island and confirm her survival across five decades: an August 1982 notice for her brother Perry J. Gatliff, a Beaver Island repairman and fishing guide, lists her among six surviving sisters as “Mrs. Bayard (Ann) Kurth of Harper Woods,” a Detroit suburb;13 a September 2005 notice for her sister Edith Eileen (“Jug”) Flynn again lists “Ann (Bayard) Kurth” among the survivors;14 and an April 2010 notice for Flynn’s husband, Tom Flynn, lists “Anne and Bayard Kurth” among his surviving in-laws — placing her alive roughly two years before the 2012 death recorded in the Beaver Island Historical Society’s Holy Cross Cemetery register.15 That register lists Anne (Gatliff) Kurth, 1942–2012, spouse Baynard Kurth, and parents Tom and Mary Pat McDonough Gatliff — matching the wedding notice’s parents and establishing her lifespan.16

Evidence and limits

The 1960–61 hospital and school notices use “Ann,” while the 1963 wedding notice and the cemetery register use “Anne”; this article treats the spelling as a variant of one person, on the strength of the matching timeline, the recurring name “Gatliff,” and the cemetery register’s independent match of spouse and parents. The husband’s own name likewise varies across sources — “Bayard Karl Kurth” at the 1963 wedding, “Baynard Karl Kurth IV” for the 1964 son — leaving open exactly how the Kurth family’s generational numbering (II, III, IV) maps onto the husband and the two sons; this article does not attempt to resolve it. No source held here gives a diagnosis, a hospital discharge record, or documents whether the September 1959 accident is otherwise recorded (a police report, for example) beyond these community notices.

Open questions

  • Where and how did the September 1959 accident occur, and were other islanders — such as Darlene Schmidt, jointly named in the January 1960 benefit party — involved in it?
  • How does the Kurth family’s “II”/“III”/“IV” naming resolve to specific individuals across the 1963 wedding notice, the 1964 birth notice, and the Bayard Kurth active in island events from 2003 to 2009?
  • When and where did Anne (Gatliff) Kurth die in 2012, and is she buried at Holy Cross Cemetery with the rest of her family?
