Summary

The Beaver Island Medical Center Auxiliary is a volunteer group that has raised money and furnished equipment for the island’s Medical Center since at least 1969, when the Beaver Beacon already described it meeting monthly toward a Cambridge EKG machine. A 1970 note from administrator Dr. Joseph Christie called an auxiliary “an organized group of women, representing the community,” and the Beacon named it the “Women’s Auxiliary” as late as 1975, though its 1977 constitution formally opened membership to men as well as women. Officers, luncheons, rummage sales, raffles and a 1983 handmade quilt funded a running Building Fund, equipment purchases from a hospital bed to a sigmoidoscope, and, by 1977, well over half the cost of an addition to the Medical Center.

History

The earliest Beaver Beacon mention of the Auxiliary found for this article is March 1969: it was already meeting regularly, charging annual dues, and working toward a telephone-linked Cambridge EKG machine costing $1,064.00. By October the Auxiliary had raised $350.00 toward it, helped by a $100.00 memorial gift from Mrs. Lawrence Garthwaite; a Hunter’s Ball and a bake sale that November added $157.00 and $38.00, and a Christmas Gift Tree raffle covered the rest. The January 1970 Beacon reported the EKG paid in full and carried Dr. Christie’s own description of a hospital auxiliary as “an organized group of women, representing the community,” thanking the officers and members for “a tremendous job” in “their first year.” A 1977 retrospective by Christie instead recalls the Auxiliary forming in his own first year on the island, which the same article dates to “ten years ago” — around 1967 — with linens, gowns and window drapes as its first project and the EKG drive the year after. No source here reconciles the two accounts exactly, but together they place the Auxiliary’s organization in 1967-69, already well established by the time continuous Beacon coverage begins.

Fundraising continued through the early 1970s: a February 1971 box social netted $150.00, and an October 1971 slide show by Dr. N. P. Sorensen on his trip to Madagascar drew islanders to the school. Officers elected in January 1972 were President Betty Welke and Secretary-Treasurer Lil McGlocklin — the same woman named “Mrs. William Welke” in that February’s building announcement. That February the Auxiliary took up a project to duplicate the size of the Medical Center, moving shielded X-ray and darkroom space to the first floor and adding laboratory and clinic space — the Center’s own expansion is recorded in its article and not restated here. Summer luncheons at the Circle M Lodge, a raffled stole, and an oil painting of sailing ships by Allie McDonough brought the Building Fund to nearly $2,500.00 by mid-1972, and a $500.00 gift from the Beaver Island Club of Grand Rapids followed that October.

By January 1973 Dr. Christie reported that the townships had approved a Center constitution providing one seat on its governing board for a Medical Auxiliary appointee. Bylined contributor Sue Montague described February and March meetings planning a rummage sale and a trading-stamp collection, and through the summer the Auxiliary ran its Circle M luncheons at $2.00 a person, raffled a knitted Afghan Montague had donated, and held a rummage sale at Beaver Haven Marina under contact Betty Anderson. By September 1973 those efforts — $291.00 from luncheons, $79.00 from the Afghan, $162.00 from the rummage sale, plus $550.00 in further donations — brought the Building Fund close to $5,800.00. The pattern repeated in 1974, with meetings at the Shamrock Bar, a proposed permanent “Trash and Trinkets” resale site, and shipwreck items donated by Robert Gillespie and Archie LaFreniere raffled at the Auxiliary’s Grand Rapids and Chicago parties; Barbara Beckers took charge of a separate account for a special Medical Center addition drive. At its April 1975 meeting — reported as “the Beaver Island Medical Center’s Women’s Auxiliary” — the group elected Mrs. Lorene Ladd president and Mrs. Grace Nackerman secretary-treasurer, thanking retiring president Betty Welke and secretary-treasurer Sue Montague. Vivian Visscher organized the summer luncheons again in 1976, praised for “doing such a magnificent job in previous years,” alongside an appeal for donated infant layettes.

The Auxiliary formalized itself in October 1977. Meeting at the home of Helen Cooper, members adopted a Constitution and By-laws that replaced its original two officers — a President and a Secretary-Treasurer “from its beginning” — with a board of President, Secretary, Treasurer, two Directors and an Immediate Past President, elected on staggered terms; the completed board named Phyllis Moore president, Connie Wojan secretary, Ruth Arden treasurer, Vivian Visscher and Sr. Lynn Hansen directors, and Lorene Ladd immediate past president. The new constitution opened membership to “all persons, men as well as women,” for purposes stated as promoting the Center’s development, health education, furnishings and equipment, and fundraising; by then the Auxiliary had accumulated enough to cover well over half the cost of the addition under construction at the Medical Center.

Equipment purchases continued into the 1980s. Summer 1979 luncheons under Vivian Visscher netted $520.00, funding a swivel stool, a baby-scale table and an over-bed table, plus half the cost of a new $1,000.00 hospital bed. In 1980 the Auxiliary paid roughly $550.00 for an electric cauterizing machine and a sigmoidoscope, and that November’s meeting heard Joan Petrak’s report on a search for an island dentist and approved further Medical Center supply purchases. The Auxiliary’s most distinctive fundraiser came in 1983: April and May notices asked islanders to “stop by to help” sew a Medical Auxiliary quilt, and the October Beacon reported the finished quilt’s winner as Judy Schroer of Columbus, Ohio.

Evidence and limits

This record is built from Beaver Beacon meeting notices, fundraising reports and one administrator’s retrospective, not the Auxiliary’s own minutes, treasury books or membership rolls, none of which survive in the held corpus. The founding date is contested between two Beacon sources: a January 1970 note implies organization around 1969, while an October 1977 retrospective by Dr. Christie places it in his own first year on the island, around 1967 — this article states both rather than choosing between them. Named officers and hostesses are recorded exactly as the Beacon printed them, sometimes by first name (Betty Welke, Vivian Visscher, Connie Wojan) and sometimes as “Mrs. [husband’s name]” (Mrs. Lawrence McDonough, Mrs. Joseph Christie, Mrs. William Welke); where a source gives only a married form, no first name is supplied here. Fundraising totals are the Beacon’s own reported sums, not audited accounts, and no source found here follows the Auxiliary’s activity after the 1983 quilt raffle.
