Summary

Circle M was a restaurant, bar, and lodging business on Beaver Island, run from the former Holy Cross parish rectory about a mile and a quarter south of St. James. Jack and Eileen Martin, retired from Buick, opened it for year-round business in October 1963, filling a gap in off-season meals and housing; in 1964 it became the first island restaurant to serve draft beer. After roughly six or seven years they sold the business to Bob and Lil McGlocklin, who ran it under variants of the Circle M name — Circle M Lodge, Circle M Supper Club, Circle M Dinner Club — for more than three decades, remodeling and reopening it in February 1973 and briefly losing the name to another operator for one summer in 1992. A 2003 court-ordered foreclosure sale, brought by the McGlocklins against a defaulted purchaser called Old Rectory Real Estate Partnership, returned the property to them after a courthouse-steps auction drew no bidders. Bob McGlocklin died in 2008. By 2012 “Circle M” had been refiled as an assumed business name at the same address by Colleen M. Martin and Joseph B. Martin. No held source records the business’s name or status after that filing.

History

Jack and Eileen Martin retired to Beaver Island after Jack’s 28 years at Buick and bought the island’s former Catholic rectory, left behind when Holy Cross Church moved closer to St. James. The October 1963 Beacon reported them “open for year around business,” offering meals and lodging at a season when few island establishments stayed open past deer season. Eileen’s 1999 obituary describes the progression: first a bed-and-breakfast for hunters, then full meal service, “and finally as one of the finest restaurants on the Island (named the Circle M).” In 1964 it became the first restaurant on the island to serve draft beer with a meal, and that October it advertised Friday take-out dinners of whitefish, shrimp, and fried chicken as Circle M Lodge, and by 1967 was adding to its dining room with live music planned for the summer.

After six years by one account and seven by another, the Martins sold Circle M to Bob and Lil McGlocklin, who had moved to the island the previous month with their five children. By June 1971 the Lodge was open year-round with smorgasbord dinners twice a week. Bob McGlocklin used the 1972–73 off-season to remodel the property; the January 1973 Beacon named him as the business’s contact for a snowmobiling package and advertised a limited schedule ahead of “full schedule” service resuming January 30, and the February issue reported Circle M reopened after “extensive remodeling,” with a February 3 smorgasbord attended by many islanders. Through the mid-1970s, as Circle M Supper Club, it advertised a standard schedule with free transportation by phone, expanding by 1974 to serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The business hosted the island’s March 1974 tourism seminar and catered a September 1976 cocktail party the Charlevoix County State Bank held for residents at Wojan’s Motel, and through the 1980s and 1990s was the regular venue for the Medical Center Auxiliary’s benefit luncheons, the Civic Association’s anniversary dinners, and other fundraising that a 1983 Charlevoix Courier feature credited to the club’s donated space.

Ownership briefly changed in 1992: that June and July the Beacon advertised “Stoney Acres Farm Restaurant & Bar (in the former Circle M Supper Club),” run by Dave and Shannon Heynig, but by January 1993 the business was again “The Circle M,” under the McGlocklins’ ownership and management. They marked their 20th year of ownership with an October 1990 anniversary party, and a 1996 Beacon profile credited them with over 25 years as island residents and volunteers.

The business changed hands under contested circumstances in 2003. On June 27, two dozen people gathered at the Old Rectory for an auction billed as covering “the defunct restaurant”; when only one bidder registered, the auctioneer initially called it off, but two more bidders, Keith Albin and Bud Martin, then registered and drove up the bidding, with Martin — hoping to bring his oldest daughter back to run a business — making the highest bid. Attorneys later found that sale improper. A Circuit Court judgment entered the same day by Judge Richard M. Pajtas, favoring plaintiffs Robert A. and E. Lillian McGlocklin against an entity called Old Rectory Real Estate Partnership, set a proper foreclosure sale for September 5, 2003 on the courthouse steps in Charlevoix. No bidders appeared, and Bob McGlocklin was declared sole owner once again, with the Beacon reporting the property’s past owners would have a grace period to reclaim it.

Bob McGlocklin, described in his obituary as “former owner and operator of the Circle M,” died in Florida on April 25, 2008. In February 2009 the Beacon reported Karl Heller using “the Old Rectory kitchen” for a special Austrian Night, and in January 2010 the Fire Department credited a Bob McGlocklin Memorial Fund, set up by his family, with $10,000 toward new equipment. A 2012 Charlevoix Courier filing lists Circle M as an assumed business name at 26300 Old Church Crest Road, filed by Colleen M. Martin and Joseph B. Martin — the same road on which Bud Martin had hoped, nine years earlier, to install his daughter. No held source states whether Colleen M. Martin is related to Bud Martin or any earlier owner, or documents the business’s name or operations after 2003.

Evidence and limits

This record rests almost entirely on Beaver Beacon reporting — classified ads, community notices, obituaries, and its own “Years Ago” column, treated here as evidence for the events it reprints. Two apparent 2005 and 2009 death notices proved, on checking that column’s dating, to be reprints of 1995 and 1998 material rather than new deaths a decade later; this article cites the original 1995 and 1999 obituaries instead. The 2003 foreclosure is corroborated by an independent source, the Circuit Court’s own sale notice published in the Charlevoix Courier, which supplies exact names and a recorded liber and page the Beacon account lacks. This article also corrects one existing citation: a November 1976 advertisement previously attributed to Circle M Lodge for hunting, fishing, and cross-country-ski packages belongs to a different business, Beaver Lodge, printed nearby in the same issue. No held source establishes a continuous ownership chain from 1963 to 2012, whether the 2012 filers are related to any earlier owner, or the business’s name or status after the July 2012 forum notices.

Significance

For at least three decades Circle M was one of a small number of island businesses that stayed open through the off-season, and its dining room became the default venue for the Medical Center Auxiliary’s fundraising luncheons and the Civic Association’s anniversary dinners — a role a 1983 newspaper feature credited to the club’s donated space. Its 2003 foreclosure is one of the few island business transactions in the held corpus documented through an independent court record rather than the Beacon alone.
