Summary
The Medical Center Auxiliary met at the Shamrock Bar on 21 March 1974 and planned benefit luncheons at Circle M for 18 June, 16 July, and 20 August, a 30 July rummage sale, and raffles of shipwreck items. It also organized a special drive for a Medical Center addition while the building’s drawings awaited review in Lansing for state specifications.
History
At the March meeting, co-hosted by Vera Jimsak, the Auxiliary set a main dish for each summer luncheon (meat loaf in June, chicken salad in July, ham in August) without yet naming a chairman, and invited summer residents to join for lunch and to contribute to the menu. Rummage-sale goods could be dropped at the Shamrock or at Betty Anderson’s home on Donegal Bay; the Auxiliary was also considering a permanent site for a year-round “Trash and Trinkets” shop. Robert Gillespie and Archie LaFreniere agreed to donate items of shipwreck salvage to be raffled at the Beaver Island parties held in Grand Rapids and Chicago, with proceeds going toward Medical Center improvements. For the building addition itself, Barbara Beckers agreed to handle donations to a dedicated fund, and the Beacon printed a mailing address for contributions.
The April 1974 issue ran a correction: the Building Fund account was not newly opened, as the March report had stated, but an existing account into which new donations were being deposited. By May–June 1974, the Beacon reported the summer luncheons had begun at Circle M, with the July 16 and August 20 dates still ahead, and announced a 24 July White Elephant Sale at the old LaFreniere store.
Evidence and limits
These are reported plans, a correction, and a mid-summer status update, not receipts, attendance records, raffle results, addition-construction completion, or proof that every proposed date occurred as planned.
