Summary

The Shamrock Restaurant and Pub is a bar and eating house on Main Street in Saint James, trading continuously since the late 1930s and the longest-running licensed business on Beaver Island. It was founded by Archie LaFreniere — for four years in partnership with his brother Vernon “Dick” LaFreniere — in the former Village Inn, which Archie bought from his father and moved across the street. It has passed through at least four ownerships since, and traded under four names. Eric and Dana Hodgson have run it since 1996. This record follows the business; the building is treated separately.

Current operation

As of August 2026 the house trades as the Shamrock Restaurant and Pub at 26245 Main Street, under Eric and Dana Hodgson, and its proprietors describe it as open year-round.1 It is listed on the commercial review platforms under two different styles and with two different review populations — 4.1 from 38 reviews on Google as the Shamrock Restaurant and Pub, 3.8 from 106 on Tripadvisor as the Shamrock Bar and Restaurant, both retrieved 14 August 2026.23 Those figures describe the platforms, not the house, and are recorded rather than quoted as a rating.

History

The business begins with a removal rather than a construction: Archie LaFreniere bought the Village Inn from his father, moved the building across Main Street, and renamed it the Shamrock.4 For its first years it was a partnership. An October 1978 obituary of his brother records that Dick “and his brother, Archie, owned and operated the Shamrock Bar as partners until 1941,” when Dick bought the McCann general store opposite the ferry dock; he “had sold his interest in the Shamrock Bar to his brother in 1946.”5 Archie married Frances Connaghan in 1940, and a 2012 retrospective ties the marriage and the proprietorship together.6

The Beacon’s own record of Archie at the bar runs from February 1955, when a card-party linen shower for the Medical Center was “held in the Shamrock” and “Archie’s bell started off each game,” through a new parking lot and picket fence that May, a 1959 fishing anecdote that ends “stop over to the Shamrock & ask Archie,” and a 1966 refit.78910 Through the same decades the house was the island’s default room for charity: the Polio Fund, the American Cancer Society and the Medical Center Auxiliary all held benefits there.111213

Archie sold in April 1973 after “an illustrious and colorful proprietorship covering 36 years,” to Barbara Becker Anderson of Grand Blanc and her cousins Cyril “Tim” and Vera Jean Timsak of Muskegon.14 Tim was co-owner for about eighteen months before selling his half-interest to Barb and her parents, Buz and Betty Anderson; the advertising follows the change exactly, carrying both names from September 1973 to August 1974 and Barb Beckers alone from that November.1516 Under the Andersons the business added a kitchen and became a restaurant as well as a bar — by mid-1974 “featuring breakfast, lunch and dinner with their new kitchen” — and in 1988 built a harbour-side deck seating sixty-four.1718 Betty Anderson worked in the house for more than ten years.19

In June 1996 the Beacon announced Eric and Dana Hodgson taking on “Beaver Island’s great old institution,” with changes expected to be “subtle ones — a few new items on the menu; redecoration in small doses; live entertainment on weekends.” Dana is a lifetime islander, daughter of John and Jeanne Gillespie; Eric came from Charlevoix and was part owner of Island Airways.20 By 1998 they were running the Shamrock, a grocery and the Beachcomber together, and Eric is named “Owner/Host of the Shamrock” in 1999.2122 The Shamrock and the Beachcomber were still being promoted as a pair in 2008.23

Names

Four styles are attested, and the island paper used none of them as often as the bare “the Shamrock.” Shamrock Inn appears in the 1945 Charlevoix County Herald and survives colloquially in a 1978 Beacon wedding verse; Shamrock Bar is the 1973 advertising style; Shamrock Bar and Restaurant runs through Beacon prose from the late 1980s to at least October 2013; and Shamrock Restaurant and Pub is first held in an April 2008 sponsor list and is current today.24252326 The older style has not died — Tripadvisor still lists the house as the Shamrock Bar and Restaurant.

The founding year is unsettled. The 1973 sale notice implies 1937; the 1992 and 2012 profiles imply 1937–38; the business’s own website says 1935.1 All three are recorded and none preferred. Printed ownership names also drift: the Beacon rendered one man “Cyril,” “Tim,” “Jim,” “Jimsak” and “Timsak” across two years before a 2011 obituary resolved him as Cyril “Tim” Joseph Timsak.15 Each issue’s printed form is followed rather than silently normalised.

Significance

Nearly ninety years of continuous trade under one name makes this the island’s longest-running business, and the Beacon’s coverage shows why that matters beyond commerce: the Shamrock is where the island held its benefits, its New Year’s Eve party, its St. Patrick’s Day, and — in 1945 — a justice-of-the-peace trial. A 1992 profile reports that the New York Times once ran a front-page photograph of islanders keeping St. Patrick’s Day in the Shamrock; the photograph itself is not held here and the claim is reported as the Beacon’s.4

Evidence and limits

This is a business history assembled almost entirely from one local newspaper. No deed, licence, assessment roll or incorporation record has been consulted, so every ownership date is a date of announcement, not of transfer. Ownership between the Anderson family and the Hodgsons’ 1996 purchase is not covered by any held source. Nothing later than 2014 is in the held Beacon run, so the twelve years to 2026 rest on the business’s own website and two commercial listings — adequate to establish that it trades and under what name, and adequate for nothing else. Hours, prices and menus are deliberately not recorded.
