Summary
Island health history is chiefly a story of access. Getting professional care to the island meant working around the seasons and the crossing, and then holding it in place through community institutions, public funding, equipment, and emergency transfer arrangements. The record does not support a smooth or continuous service history. It instead preserves distinct episodes: irregular early care, the 1923 emergency flight, a 1953 community drive for a facility and physician, the Medical Center’s later capabilities and fundraising, and the 2003–04 Rural Health Center project.
This theme concerns public infrastructure and historical context, not private medical history. It does not repeat patient diagnoses or clinical details from linked records.
The related health research dossier records the ten-source collection, evidence matrix, and dated timeline behind this survey. It explicitly excludes patient records and retains conflicting institutional-date statements rather than silently resolving them.
Before a durable facility
A later local-history account says doctors came and went, that people sometimes went to the mainland by fishboat, and that a physician could be flown in. It also says Feodor Protar—who had no medical training—was sometimes asked by neighbors to help. Those statements are community memory, not a staffing roster or a measure of care quality.
The February 1923 Army Plane Medical Flight to Beaver Island is a firmer dated access record: unsafe ice made ordinary travel impossible and an Army aircraft brought a physician through Charlevoix. It documents an emergency transport contingency, not a complete early emergency-service system.
Community institution, capability, and support
The local-history narrative places a public meeting and Civic Association organizing effort in 1953, followed by fundraising, site selection, and a reported 1954 opening. The reported organizing sequence is separately modeled at Reported Civic Association formation and Medical Center organizing drive, 1953, with its retrospective-source limits. Current Rural Health Center material uses 1955 as an establishment date. The KB preserves both dates as a source discrepancy; state licensing, township minutes, and facility files are needed before choosing a single institutional date.
By 1971, the contemporary administrator account gathered under Beaver Island Medical Center describes hospital and maternity licenses, diagnostic equipment, telephone-linked consultation, and daytime air/nighttime Coast Guard transport arrangements. It is an administrator’s report, not independent proof of every license or capability. The linked Auxiliary and fundraising records show how expansions, furnishing, and equipment depended on volunteer and outside support. They do not supply a complete audited ledger or prove every proposed project was built.
Transfers and the newer facility
The 1974 emergency-aircraft proposal and later evacuation records connect care to the airport, county decisions, charter services, and Coast Guard capacity. Read them as individual public-access episodes, not as a statistical record of all transfers. The Approval and opposition to Beaver Island emergency aircraft, 1974 record also distinguishes a reported approval from proof of a completed program.
In 2003, a Beaver Beacon article described a state-supported plan to furnish a replacement health center through reused equipment, outside institutional help, grants, donations, and art. The Beaver Island Rural Health Center grand opening, 2004 records the June 25 public opening of the new facility. The current Beaver Island Rural Health Center pages describe present services and emergency contact/transfer procedures; those current statements must not be projected backward into the earlier Medical Center period.
The 2026 MDHHS grant-procurement report adds a separate present-day public funding status: it lists a $250,000 allocation to “Beaver Island Health Center” for island primary-health-care access and services, with the agreement in process on May 1. It is not evidence of payment, spending, or changed care; see MDHHS records Beaver Island primary-health-care allocation as in process, 2026.
The approved June 2025 St. James minutes separately record an appointment of a Township representative to the Rural Health Center Board. That is evidence of a specific representation action, not a complete governance or funding model; see St. James Rural Health Center board appointment, 2025.
- Which public state and local records resolve the 1954 versus 1955 institutional dates and identify each facility’s legal status?
- What do public Civic Association, township, county, and grant records add to the community-fundraising narrative?
- Which public EMS, Coast Guard, Civil Defense, or aviation records can test transfer arrangements without exposing sensitive individual information?
- Can permits and grant agreements document the 2004 facility’s construction, opening, and governance transition?
