A June 2026 forum request for a toddler bicycle records a small, ordinary example of how recreational equipment circulated through island networks. The participant was seeking to buy a bike for a two- to three-year-old child, but the thread does not document a listing, sale, or transfer.1

In November 2020, another resident described a personal walking and dancing challenge from Happy Paddle down Main Street and Michigan Avenue toward the lighthouse and back. The account records weather, traffic encounters, and the writer’s motivation, while also recalling a Beaver Beacon article about Joddy driving backward around the island. It is useful social-history and recreation evidence, but not a measured route, organized event, or traffic study.2

Summary

Sport on Beaver Island in the Beaver Beacon record is amateur, seasonal, and small-scale, run by the school, the Civic Association, church and business sponsors, and bar-team organizers rather than by any single athletic authority. Softball and baseball are the most persistently documented sports, running from at least the 1950s through inter-island excursions and an annual Homecoming tournament that reached a 14th edition by 1989. A school athletic program, including soccer, basketball, and volleyball, appears twice in the record with different starting points — a “first” 1980 soccer game and a separately described 1984 program launch — and this survey carries that contradiction rather than resolving it. An island soccer invitational, first run in 1984 against Mackinac Island, Washington Island, and Ontario’s St. Joseph Island, continued annually into the 1990s, though its opponents shifted mostly to mainland small schools. Winter recreation centers on a Civic Association Winter Games and St. Patrick’s Day snowmobile races on harbor ice. Golf has the longest continuous newspaper trail, from a 1963 first tournament at Beaver Lodge through an annual Fourth of July tournament still reported in 2010. A yacht club organized in 1960 during a Chicago-Mackinac race stopover, and boating events continue as a lighted Fourth of July boat parade. Equipment donations, fundraising-a-thons, and off-island flights for tournaments recur throughout, reflecting how a year-round population of a few hundred sustained organized sport at all.

School athletics and the Michigan High School Athletic Association

The Beacon records two different starting points for organized athletics at Beaver Island Community School, and they do not agree. A December 1980 report describes the school’s “first competitive soccer game,” a 7–4 loss to the Charlevoix Junior League on October 24 of that year.3 A separate account, in the school board’s minutes for September 10, 1984, records the board approving a $2,000 athletic budget and a motion to join the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA); the following month’s Beacon describes the school “starting an athletic program” that fall — cross country and soccer — and hosting its First Island Soccer Tournament on October 13, 1984.45 Neither report resolves the other. The school’s own hub article states plainly that the 1980 and 1984 accounts are not reconciled, and this survey preserves that gap rather than closing it.6

A second, later reference to MHSAA appears in an August 1991 summary of school board actions, which lists “policy and MHSAA resolutions” among the June and July business that year without describing their content.7 Whether this represents the school formalizing membership already begun in 1984, a renewal, or something else entirely is not established by any source read here.

Once launched, interscholastic sport expanded quickly against small mainland and island opponents. A girls’ volleyball team completed its first season in early 1987, splitting matches against Mancelona, East Jordan, Engadine, Grand Marais, and Charlevoix before taking third place at the Newberry junior-varsity invitational under coach Connie Boyle.8 The school fielded its first basketball team in December 1988, playing at Mackinac Island alongside the volleyball squad; that team went 0–8 in its opening varsity season and did not win its first home games until January 1989.910 By September 1988 the school had joined a new five-member Northern Lights League with Harbor Light Christian, Grand Marais, Paradise, and Mackinac Island, and the league issued its first all-league selections in girls’ volleyball and boys’ basketball in March 1989.1112 The basketball program reached its first Class D district tournament in March 1992, flying nine boys to the mainland for a first-round game after a 2–8 regular season, and that December the team split its opening two games, including a double-overtime win over Hannahville.1314

Younger students had their own competitive record well before the varsity program existed. A “Tiny Tournament” basketball championship is recorded as early as 1957, and the 1972 Beacon names the “Eager Beaver” high-school basketball team, coached by Father Herbert Graf, who lost 53–27 in a February 1972 trip to Charlevoix.1516 School-wide Junior Olympics and Track and Field Day events, held in 1979 and 1987 respectively, drew kindergarten-through-twelfth-grade participation, and students competed in the Elks Club’s national Hoop Shoot free-throw contest at Traverse City in both 1991 and 1992.171819

Softball and baseball

Baseball and softball are the most continuously documented sports in the island’s newspaper record. By 1972 the Beaver Island Beachcombers were the recognized home team, sweeping a doubleheader from Charlevoix Towne House that July; the following August they split games against Charlevoix and Harbor Springs bars, with the women’s Last Calls defeating Chuck’s Marathon of Petoskey and the games broadcast live on radio for the first time.2021 Jim Janda was credited that November with sponsoring both the island’s girls’ and boys’ teams and their trips to Charlevoix, and the Beacon marked September 2, 1973 as Jim Janda Day in his honor.22 The team reorganized as the Beaver Island Ball Club in 1977, raising money for uniforms and ball-ground repairs.23

Excursion games connected the island to mainland and cross-lake opponents. In June 1975 the team and roughly 100 fans sailed to Mackinac Island aboard the Beaver Islander, winning the first game 13–7; a year later, about 150 people made a similar trip to Manistique, which the Beacon described as reviving a tradition dating to the 1920s.2425 Beaver Island hosted its own first annual slow-pitch tournament in August 1976, with Tim McDonough taking home-run, MVP, and batting honors.26 That tournament grew into an annual Homecoming event, reaching its ninth running in 1985 (won by Grey Gables) and its 14th in 1989, when Quality Limo placed first and Beaver Island second, with the Friends of the Library running concessions.2728 A Shamrock Bar-sponsored men’s team organized in 1986, and comic “Old Timers” games, pitting men 35 and older against a younger island nine, were reported at least through 1988, when the veterans won 25–13 in a rain-shortened game.2930 A Labor Day picnic and Oldsters-versus- Youngsters game at the Bud McDonough Memorial Park was a recurring 1980s fixture as well.31 An earlier, less organized contest — islanders against the local Coast Guard crew in April 1958 — produced an uncertain score and disputed umpiring the Beacon treated as comedy rather than sport news.32 Island softball also produced at least one nationally reported athlete: Cathy Buaman, daughter of islander Edward Jouzapaitis, was named a first-team All-American catcher after her Orlando Stars won the 1981 Women’s National Slow-pitch Softball championship, an account the Beacon reprinted from the Little Sentinel.33

An island soccer invitational

The school’s soccer tournament is the clearest instance in the held record of a genuinely inter-island athletic circuit. Its first running, on October 13, 1984, brought Mackinac Island, Washington Island, and St. Joseph Island, Ontario to Beaver Island for a tournament at Circle M Lodge; two teams cancelled for fog and rain, and St. Joseph’s Island won ahead of Beaver Island and Washington Island, with a dinner and dance afterward at the CMU Biological Station.5 The tournament continued annually, but its field did not stay island-to-island. The third annual event in 1986 drew Elk Rapids, Charlevoix, and Harbor Springs — all mainland small schools — and Beaver Island finished fourth of four.34 The fifth annual tournament in 1988 again matched Charlevoix and Harbor Springs against the home team, and a sixth annual event ran on the school’s new field in October 1989.3536 Mackinac Island reappears as an opponent in the tournament’s ninth annual running in October 1992, when Beaver Island won ahead of Mackinac Island and Paradise in muddy conditions, though Grand Marais and Paradise, not the founding island opponents, had also featured in the intervening 1990 tournament.3738 The founding 1984 concept of a circuit among Great Lakes islands is real and distinctive, but the held sources show it settling, within a few years, into a mixed field of island and small mainland schools rather than a sustained island-versus-island series.

Younger and less formal soccer play predates and runs alongside the tournament. Student accounts describe a 1–0 loss at Charlevoix and an 11–0 home win over Vanderbilt in November 1981, and seventh, eighth, and ninth graders raised $400 at a pancake breakfast to travel to a Harbor Springs tournament in 1983, reporting a 4–3 win over Charlevoix among their results.3940

Winter Games and snowmobile racing

Organized winter sport centers on two recurring events: the Civic Association’s Winter Games and St. Patrick’s Day snowmobile races on harbor ice. The earliest held snowmobile races ran on March 17, 1971, five events on a roughly half-mile course laid out on St. James Harbor ice, judged successful enough that the Beacon reported plans for “a larger program the following year”; the 1972 edition paired harbor races with Civic Association-run children’s foot races and a Holy Cross dinner.4142 Snowmobile racing also moved inland: a January 1974 cross-country race covered 8.3 miles near Font and Barney’s Lakes, finishing eleven riders led by Richie Gillespie, Ed Wojan, and Jim Wojan.43 Some islanders traveled off-island for the sport as well, attending the International Snowmobile Races (the “I-500”) at Sault Sainte Marie in February 1971.44 Recreational, non-competitive snowmobile trips — a January 1969 “safari” to island cabins and a February 1970 crossing over lake ice to Whiskey, Squaw, and Garden Islands — predate the organized harbor races and suggest the sport arrived on the island as transportation and touring before it became a timed contest.45

The Civic Association’s Winter Games, reported in their third annual running at Barney’s Lake on February 12, 1983, combined skating, muzzle loading, cross-country skiing, snowmobile races, and ice spudding with a chili and hot-dog tent and a Shamrock dance, with proceeds directed to the following July’s fireworks.46 A later edition, held January 29, 1987 at Font Lake, again paired cross-country ski races with a snowmobile obstacle course and children’s games.47

Golf

Golf has the longest continuous documented run of any sport on the island. Beaver Lodge Golf and Country Club hosted the first annual tournament on June 23, 1963, drawing ten entrants from Michigan communities for a buffet-supper event.48 A junior championship followed the next year, decided by a sudden-death playoff for the Dr. Sorensen Trophy, and by 1971 the trophy had become an annual fixture, won that year by Timmy McDonough.4950 Through the early 1970s the Beaver Beacon’s recurring “Golf Notes” column tracked a driving range under construction, named tournaments — the Beaver Gems and the Beachcomber Open — a new starter house built by volunteer labor, and a visiting golf group hosted by Dr. and Mrs. N. P. Sorenson that received lessons from island pro Matt Melville.51525354 By 1977 the course is reported under the name Beaver Island Golf Course, with fees of $3 for nine holes, $5 for eighteen, and $100 for a family membership.55 A Fourth Annual Shamrock Open ran in July 1978 with separate men’s and women’s scoring divisions.56 Individual feats surface occasionally: Tom Dorais recorded a hole-in-one on the sixth hole with a 7-wood in August 1989.57

A Fourth of July golf tournament became a fixture of the island’s Independence Day program from at least 2004 through 2010, consistently drawing roughly 80 to 90 golfers and producing tightly bunched scores — three-under-par 32 in 2004 and 2005 (the latter resolved by a sudden-death playoff), four-under-par 31 in 2006 and 2007, and a reported record-low six-under-par 29 in 2009, when Team Houseman won “after six years of trying.”585960616263

Boating and yacht racing

Organized boating on the island traces to a single well-documented moment: in August 1960, more than fifty yachts and cruisers filled Beaver Harbor’s docks during a stopover tied to the Chicago-Mackinac race, and yachtsmen aboard the Sabre and Gypsy, led by Bill Whalen, organized the Beaver Island Yacht Club at the King Strang Hotel.64 By its first-year report in May 1962 the club had affiliated with the Lake Michigan Yachting Association and counted 56 charter members, with dock, slip, and clubhouse projects proposed.65 A First Annual Beaver Island Regatta ran on July 30, 1978, after a weather postponement, as a shortened race to a two-mile buoy and back to the Yacht Dock among three boats in three classes.66 Recreational boat racing resurfaced decades later as the Clyde Fogg Memorial Boat Parade, a lighted evening event tied to the modern Fourth of July program, though no source read here connects that later parade organizationally to the 1960s yacht club or the 1978 regatta.

Fielding a team in a small community

A year-round population of a few hundred shows up in the record’s recurring concern with equipment, money, and travel rather than in any single institution. In February 1958, a new island property owner, F. Arnold Conn, donated skating-rink reflectors, shoe skates, balls, bats, and horseshoes to the Civic Association — recreation equipment the community itself did not yet own.67 Student athletics repeatedly turned to fundraising: a March 1987 volleyball-a-thon by seven island teams was intended to help pay for camp, uniforms, and equipment, and a similar event ran again in February 1989.6869 A local rental shop changed hands and was renamed Island Sports and Rental in 1981, adding a year-round source of equipment alongside seasonal club and school programs.70

Travel is the other constant. Winning a district tournament berth in 1992 meant flying nine players to the mainland; earlier decades’ teams crossed by boat, aboard the Beaver Islander to Mackinac Island and Manistique, or by charter to away games at Charlevoix.132425 The island also hosted visiting athletes: a Wyoming-Rogers High School cross-country team trained at the CMU Campground for a week in August 1989, running twice daily.71 Individual islanders’ sporting achievements off the island are documented mainly through family and community notices rather than independent athletic records — Mike Masini’s Notre Dame football scholarship in 1981, Todd McDonough’s 1983 All-State football season at Central Lake High School, and Connie Wojan’s completion of the 1989 Chicago Marathon are each known from a single Beacon item connecting the athlete to an island family.727374 Recreational fishing tournaments run by the Beaver Island Wildlife Club, such as its second annual salmon derby in August 1989, sit at the edge of this survey’s scope; a 2006 forum discussion adds contemporary community observations about recreational fishing in Font, Fox, Geneserath, and Greenes Lakes, as well as offshore steelhead and salmon, but is not a fisheries survey.75 Hunting and fishing organized as wildlife or game management belong to a separate survey of the island’s conservation history.76

Open questions

  • Did the school’s organized athletic program begin with the October 1980 soccer game or the fall 1984 program the school itself described as new? The two Beacon accounts are not reconciled here, and this survey carries that contradiction from the school’s own hub article.
  • Did the school’s MHSAA membership date to the September 1984 board motion, the unspecified “MHSAA resolutions” recorded in June–July 1991, or both?
  • Why did the 1984 Island Soccer Tournament’s field of Mackinac Island, Washington Island, and St. Joseph Island, Ontario give way within a few years to mostly mainland small-school opponents, and did any later edition return to a fully island-to-island field beyond the partial 1992 return of Mackinac Island?
  • Is the modern Clyde Fogg Memorial Boat Parade connected, through any continuous club or sponsoring body, to the 1960 Beaver Island Yacht Club or the 1978 regatta?
  • When did the Beaver Lodge Golf Club become known as the Beaver Island Golf Course, and under what ownership or management change?
  • No source read here supplies official scorebooks, timing sheets, or league standings for any of these events; nearly every claim in this survey rests on newspaper results reporting rather than an athletic association’s own records.
