Summary

The Holy Cross Altar Society is the women’s organization of Holy Cross Catholic Church on Beaver Island, first documented in the Beaver Beacon in February 1958 and recorded continuously through at least 1997. It elected a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer most years and ran the parish’s two recurring fundraisers — a December Christmas Bazaar and a St. Patrick’s Day dinner or dance, both usually held at Holy Cross Parish Hall — while also holding periodic pantry showers for the Dominican Sisters who taught at the island school, contributing to the 1966 convent-building fund, repairing the Parish Hall kitchen after a 1961 fire, and repeatedly cooking or co-sponsoring the island’s August Homecoming dinner. No charter, minutes, or complete financial record for the society survives in the held sources; what is documented is a long, name-by-name record of officers and specific, dated fundraising events spanning nearly four decades.

Officers and governance

The society elected a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer at the start of most years, sometimes at a member’s home — the February 8, 1960 election met at Eva McDonough’s house. The earliest documented slate, from February 1958, named Musette LaFreniere president, with Grace Nackerman, Lizzie LaFreniere, and Theresa Gallagher filling the other three offices. The Beacon printed at least ten further slates through January 1977: Mrs. Jack Connaghan (1960), Mary McDonough (1961), Eva McDonough (March 1962), Mary Minor (December 1963/January 1964, and again February 1966), Rose Connaghan (February 1965 and January 1976), Madonna McCafferty (January 1972), and Joy Green (January 1971 and January 1977) each served a term as president in the years the Beacon reported an election.

Several names recur across offices and decades — Mary Minor was secretary in 1962 and president in 1963/64 and 1966; Rita Gillespie was secretary in 1976 and vice-president in 1977 — but the paper’s naming shifts from year to year, sometimes as “Mrs. [husband’s name]” and sometimes by a woman’s own first name and married surname. This article keeps each year’s officer list in the form the Beacon printed it rather than merging name forms the sources do not explicitly equate.

The Christmas Bazaar and St. Patrick’s Day

Two fundraisers anchor the society’s calendar in the surviving record. Its Christmas Bazaar, held “for the benefit of Holy Cross Church,” is first attested on December 13, 1959, when a well-attended bazaar drew several booths, the homemade-candy stand proving especially popular. The December 22, 1963 bazaar took in $80 in total receipts and raffled a quilt made by Elsie O’Donnell to a visiting priest from Kalamazoo. By December 1966 the bazaar, held at Holy Cross Hall, paired an Altar Society booth with one run by the Beaver Island Christian Church’s Women’s Circle, with lunch served to a capacity crowd. That same spring the two women’s groups had jointly run an April 25 White Elephant Sale at the Christian Church that split $99.02 in receipts, with the Altar Society giving its half back to “help the new Church get its start.”

St. Patrick’s Day produced a corned-beef-and-ham dinner in Holy Cross Hall as early as March 17, 1958, with music from a children’s “flutophone” band under Sister Rene. The society sponsored the island’s dinner — sometimes a supper, sometimes a weekend combining a dance, a dinner, and a drawing — in at least 1958, 1960 through 1962, 1965, 1967, and 1970, and again in a joint four-day programme with the Beaver Island Civic Association in March 1975, usually at Holy Cross Parish Hall. Proceeds were occasionally reported: the March 1962 supper coincided with a separately collected $981 in donations to the Holy Cross Cemetery Care Fund, and the March 1967 dinner’s $225 in total proceeds, after expenses, split $70 to the parish Convent Fund and $90 to the society. A March 1965 St. James card party benefited the society’s own “Kitchen Improvement Fund” directly. Supporting the Dominican Sisters and the Parish Hall

The society held a pantry shower for the Dominican Sisters at the convent at least six times between January 1958 and April 1966, each with a specific reported gift: an eight-day mantel clock (1958), a kitchen stool (February 1961), and a gift toward repairing the convent garden fence plus a cash donation toward a new convent, at the April 1966 shower (about 33 women attending). When a community drive to build the Sisters a new home opened with a $5-per-plate dinner at the Parish Hall in May 1966, raising $455 the first night, the organizing committee — chaired by Father Louis Wren, with Archie LaFreniere as treasurer and Sister M. Euphrasine as secretary — named Mary Minor as the Altar Society’s representative.

The society also maintained the Parish Hall’s kitchen. In May 1965 it reported a kitchen-improvement project underway, with a new floor laid and cupboards next, raising money for the work through a hand-appliqué Shamrock Quilt giveaway and a lunch stand at a ball game. The project followed a July 1961 fire that had damaged the Hall’s kitchen wall during a Dawn Patrol breakfast, after which the society had served that year’s St. Patrick’s supper as a buffet rather than a sit-down meal because the kitchen was not yet fully usable.

Catering the Homecoming

The Altar Society repeatedly catered or co-sponsored the island’s August Homecoming. In August 1960, during the parish’s centenary celebration, “the ladies of the Altar Society under the direction of Mrs. John Gallagher served the traditional roast beef dinner.” Two years later the Beacon named the society as the day’s sole sponsor, covering the dinner, the parade committee (chaired by Joe Grossel), and an evening dance. In 1964 it ran a cafeteria-style lunch counter, booth, and auction instead, thanking named donors and the women who worked on a raffled quilt. It was thanked by name for its role in the 1968 and 1978 Homecomings. At the August 1980 Homecoming weekend, its raffle of a hand-made Irish afghan ran alongside a Sweet Adelines stereo raffle and the church’s “Basket of Joy.”

Map status

The coordinate is the current approximate point for Holy Cross Parish Hall, the society’s repeatedly documented venue for dinners, bazaars, and other parish activities. It is a representative activity location, not evidence of a separate society office or a claim that every meeting occurred there.

Evidence and limits

This record is built entirely from Beaver Beacon notices, announcements, and after-the-fact reports; no charter, minutes, financial ledger, or complete membership roster for the society survives in the held sources. Reported dollar figures ($80, $99.02, $225, $455, $981) are newspaper totals, not audited accounts, and several are shared with, or partly earned by, other organizations rather than kept entirely by the Altar Society. Officer names are recorded as the Beacon printed them each year; where the paper used “Mrs. [husband’s name]” rather than a woman’s own name, this article preserves that form rather than supplying a first name the source does not give.

Open questions

  • When was the society founded? Activity is attested from February 1958, but Holy Cross Church is far older, and no source gives a founding date.
  • Are “Mrs. Jack Connaghan” (1960) and the “Rose Connaghan” named as an officer in 1965, 1975, and 1976 the same woman? No held source states this directly.
  • Did the society continue past 1997, the latest year in which a satellite article documents its sponsorship of the St. Patrick’s dinner? No later activity has been traced in this pass.
  • What became of the Kitchen Improvement Fund and the convent-fund contributions — is a full accounting preserved anywhere off-island?
