Summary
Lillian Bridget “Lil” (Green) Gallagher (1908–1997), wife of John A. “Andy” Gallagher, served on the Beaver Island Civic Association board and as vice-president of the Holy Cross Altar Society in 1960–61, and in 1974 was the patient in the first reported emergency medical flight off Beaver Island.
History
The Beaver Beacon’s February 1960 report “Big Meeting” names Lillian Gallagher as one of three directors elected to the Beaver Island Civic Association board at its January 7, 1960 meeting, without giving a term. The following year, the March 1961 “Church News” column lists Lillian Gallagher as vice-president of the Holy Cross Altar Society for the coming year.
In June 1974 she appears again, this time as “Mrs. John (Lillian) Gallagher” or “Lil Gallagher”: the May–June 1974 Beacon reports she was flown from Beaver Island on June 18, 1974 for a severe nasal hemorrhage, the first of two “evacuations” the aircraft made within one week, and a following “Medical Evacuations” note reports her home and doing well afterward. Neither report gives a clinical record beyond the hemorrhage.
Significance
The three notices span fourteen years of community and civic life — church association leadership, civic governance, and, at the end of her recorded appearances, the arrival of routine air medevac service to the island — and together give one of the fuller records in the Beacon corpus of an island woman’s public and civic roles across that period.
Evidence and limits
Identity bridge. The Holy Cross Cemetery index lists exactly one Lillian Bridget (Green) Gallagher (1908–1997), wife of John A. “Andy” Gallagher (1909–2000), daughter of John W. and Lizzy (Roddy) Green, sharing plot 239 with their son Andrew John Gallagher (1938–1980). The 1974 Beacon’s “Mrs. John (Lillian) Gallagher” and “Lil Gallagher” match this spouse and nickname directly; the 1960 and 1961 notices carry only “Lillian Gallagher,” a name this cemetery record is the only Lillian Bridget Gallagher found in the index, so the three source episodes are read as one woman rather than merged on surname alone.
None of the three notices gives a fuller civil biography, a residence beyond “Beaver Island,” or term dates for either board position.
