Summary

The 1968 Beaver Island Homecoming was held Sunday, August 11, at Holy Cross Hall: a roast beef dinner, a parade, and an evening dance. The August Beacon reports total proceeds of $700.00 after expenses, with $424 of that going to the parish Convent Fund from a raffled painting and a $100-bill drawing. The September issue carries the Holy Cross Altar Society’s thanks for “the help received at the August Dinner,” which is the source’s own attribution of the day to the Altar Society.

Program

Dinner. Roast beef, 1:00–3:00 p.m. at the Parish Hall (named “Holy Cross Hall” on the July flyer).

Parade. 3:30 p.m. Results: first, Wojan’s; second, the Episcopal Mission; third, the Medical Center. “The Parade this year had an impressive number of floats and would have had even more if there had been more trailers available.”

Raffles. A $100 bill won by Mrs. Kiedel of Lincolnwood, Illinois; a painting of Dr. Protar’s Home won by Arthur Ryan of Chicago.

Dance. 9:00 p.m. at the Parish Hall; the orchestra was “obtained thru the help of Grant Fry.”

Proceeds. $700.00 net for the day after expenses; $424 of that specifically credited to the Convent Fund from the painting raffle and the $100-bill drawing.

Evidence limits

The July flyer’s trailing fragment “21st CLASS” does not parse as part of the Homecoming program and is treated as an unrelated OCR artifact rather than interpreted. The $700.00 total is a newspaper-reported figure, not an audited account, and it is not stated whether it is gross or net of the $424 already carved out for the Convent Fund.

Open questions

  • What did “21st CLASS” on the July flyer originally refer to? Not recoverable from the held scan text.
  • Is the $700.00 “total proceeds” figure inclusive of, or additional to, the $424 Convent Fund figure reported in the same issue?
