Summary
Volume 12 preserves an August 1862 Mackinaw-supplied list by William W. Johnson under the heading “Indian Names in and About the County of Mackinac.” Its first entry gives A-mic-wug-ain-dod for “the Beaver Islands,” with the English gloss “Where the beavers live, their home,” and describes them as a group of islands northwest of Grand Traverse Bay in Lake Michigan.
This is a dated, non-modern printed name attestation. It is useful alongside Baraga’s 1853 Amikogenda entry and Wood’s 1918 reprint of a closely related form, but it does not decide a preferred present-day spelling, identify all islands intended by the collective label, or establish language use by a particular community.
Evidence limits
The held page presents the list as supplied in 1862, but the Internet Archive volume is itself a later printed edition. The record therefore attributes the spelling, English gloss, and geographic description to Johnson’s list as reprinted; it does not present them as a contemporaneous recording or linguistic analysis verified against an original 1862 manuscript.
