Summary
Edwin O. Wood’s Historic Mackinac, Volume II, is a 1918 regional history and place-name compilation. Its Indian-names chapter prints A-mic-wug-ain-dod for the Beaver Islands and translates it as “Where the beavers live, their home.”
The volume states that the chapter’s material derives from Dwight H. Kelton’s Indian Names of Places near the Great Lakes. It is therefore useful as a dated printed attestation in the Beaver Island name history, not as a replacement for direct language-community evidence or a normalized modern spelling.
Evidence limits
Wood’s 1918 rendering identifies a historical published form and translation. It does not establish that spelling as the original, sole, current, or preferred Anishinaabemowin name, nor does it identify a particular historical community, political boundary, or present-day usage.
