Summary
Fox Lake Road is a named road on Beaver Island’s current OpenStreetMap map.
One held way carries that name, and its geometry is the whole route: about 5.3
km. It meets five other named roads, listed under intersects_road.
Evidence and limits
The name and the alignment are what mappers last entered, and OpenStreetMap is
volunteered work rather than a survey: it settles neither the right-of-way nor
who maintains the road. Where the name came from is a separate question. Plats,
road-commission minutes, and island memory answer that one. Put an older
spelling from any of them into alt_names or former_names, with the source
that attests it.
The 1978 Historical Map makes a more specific historical claim: Fox Lake Road was the farthest south any early west-side road ran. The map does not define “early,” identify the roads compared, or cite dated maps or road records. That claim is retained as a research lead, not treated as established. The current OpenStreetMap line cannot be retrojected as the early alignment.
Documented associations
These source-backed records provide context for the mapped route:
- Beaver Island road committee repair list, 1994 — At the St. James township report dated May 4, 1994, the Beaver Island road committee gave the Road Commission a list of repair needs. The list named Mrs. Redding’s Trail, Barney’s Lake Road, Hannigan Road, and Mike Boyle’s Turnaround, among other island routes, and said an engineer would meet with the committee on May 13. The notice records a repair-planning…
- Peaine Township lists road and access requests for 1996, 1995 — At its November 6, 1995 regular meeting, Peaine Township listed several road and access matters for follow-up in 1996. The Beaver Beacon names Mike Boyle’s Beach turnaround, Cable’s Beach Road, Fox Lake Road, Greenes’ Bay Road, the Blue Trail right-of-way, and Bonner’s Landing; the same report separately records a county contract for Redding’s Trail Road…
- Beaver Islands State Wildlife Research Area — Beaver Islands State Wildlife Research Area is a Michigan Department of Natural Resources public-land designation covering substantial state-managed land in the Beaver Island archipelago, dating from the 1970s. Local reporting places 9,195.5 acres of the Beaver Island portion within the 2024…
- Fox Lake Public Access — Fox Lake Public Access is a public recreation site listed in the Beaver Island recreation-facilities inventory. The inventory places it on Fox Lake Road, identifies Peaine Township ownership, and lists fishing, paddling, a picnic table, and an outhouse.
- Fox Lake Road 40-acre tract — A 1974 Beaver Beacon classified advertisement offered a 40-acre tract on Fox Lake Road. The ad described it as the northwest quarter of the northwest quarter of Section 28 in Peaine Township and gave Philip L. Burke in St. James as the contact. The May issue repeated the offer. This is a source-qualified listing record. It does not establish a completed…
