Summary

Walter A. Wojan was a St. James building contractor, motel proprietor and civic officer whose work the Beaver Beacon recorded from at least 1951 into the twenty-first century. The paper spelled his surname both Wojan and Wogan throughout that run, sometimes within the same story, and this record treats the two as one spelling-variant name — see Evidence and limits. He and his wife, Vera (McDonough) Wojan, raised a large family on Beaver Island, and he was named St. James Township dump caretaker at the April 30, 1973 joint township meeting. Retrospective columns published decades later document him active on the island’s ice and snow through the 1960s, including a rescue of two stranded hikers in 1963, and confirm he was still living on Beaver Island as of 2011.

History

The earliest held record of Wojan’s construction work predates the Beacon’s own start: a March 2003 “Fifty Years Ago” retrospective recalls that A. J. Roy and his wife Mabel built a cottage in St. James in 1951, paying Walter Wojan “the unheard-of amount of $1 per hour.” The Beacon’s own contemporary coverage begins in 1955, with a three-bedroom log demonstration cabin he and Rogers Carlisle built at Look-Out Point; a 2003 retrospective adds that Wojan poured the slab for, and then built, his own cabin the following year. Over the next two decades he is credited with cedar-log tourist units next to the Isle Haven Tourist Court (1960), the Harbor View Motel and its A-frame cabins (1963), private docks at Lake Geneserath and in the harbor (1965), and the Holy Cross rectory, for which he submitted the low bid in 1963. In June 1960 the Beacon reported the opening of “Walter and Vera Wojan’s new tourist court,” and in 1971 the couple opened a second property, the Harbor View II Motel, run jointly with the first.

Wojan appears repeatedly in the Beacon’s winter and hunting coverage. A 2003 “Forty Years Ago” retrospective recounts that in February 1963, when two brothers named Whitley walked to the island from Charlevoix and became stranded on the ice five miles from shore near Sand Bay, “Walter Wojan took his snow scooter out onto the ice and found them”; after he brought them to town and warmed them, the Civic Association held a smorgasbord in their honor at the Shamrock. He is recorded as an active beaver trapper — a 2003 retrospective of the 1953 season describes one of “Walt’s first traps” snapping shut on a beaver’s tail — and as a snowmobile racer, winning a St. Patrick’s Day race in 1961 and reaching Sault Ste. Marie for the I-500 snowmobile race that same year with Bud McDonough and Russ Green. A 2011 retrospective recalls that for one St. Patrick’s Day, “Walt Wojan loaded 26 kids on his truck and took them to Mt. Pisgah for sledding.” In 1968 he was one of five islanders — with Archie and Alvin LaFreniere, Perry Crawford and Phil Gregg — who crossed by snowmobile to Cross Village in dangerous, low-visibility weather, navigating by compass toward White Shoals Light and crossing the icebreaker Mackinaw’s fresh channel before reaching the mainland after dark.

Wojan served the island’s civic institutions for years: elected a trustee of the Beaver Island Historical Society in 1957 and again in 1964, during the Society’s restoration of James Strang’s Print Shop, on which he and his crew performed unpaid labor; and a Beaver Island Civic Association board member following the January 1964 election.

Wojan’s parents were Anthony and Sophie Wojan, who moved the family to Charlevoix in 1948; a September 1961 wedding notice for Madelyn M. Wojan names her “sister of Walter Wojan of St. James,” and his mother’s obituary that same month records four other sons and five daughters besides Walter. A 2011 Charlevoix Courier obituary for a brother, Anthony John “Tony” Wojan, Jr., names further siblings (Delores Gallagher, Mary Wood, Phyllis (Norman) Switzer, Albert Wojan of Charlevoix, and predeceased siblings Edward Wojan, Ted Wojan, Daniel Wojan and Stella Duberville) and documents “Walt Wojan of Beaver Island” alive as of September 2011.

Wojan married Vera M. McDonough, daughter of Lloyd and Eva (LaFreniere) McDonough; Lloyd McDonough’s 1972 obituary lists “Mrs. Walter (Vera) Wojan” among his surviving daughters. Beacon notices name at least seven of their children across three decades: Edward Bruce (“Ed”), Jeanne Marie, Ronald (“Ron”), Audrey, Patricia (“Patty”), Diane Terese and James L. Wojan. A March 2011 graduation notice for granddaughter Christie Brynaert — Patty (Wojan) Brynaert’s daughter — identifies her as “the granddaughter of Walt Wojan and the niece of Ed (Connie) Wojan, Ron (Patti) Wojan, Jim (Karen) Wojan, Jeanne (John) Gillespie all of Beaver Island,” confirming the spouses of four of his children still living on the island sixty years after his construction career began. A granddaughter, Caroline Christine, was born in 1972 to Edward and his wife, Constance.

Evidence and limits

On the Wojan/Wogan spelling. The Beacon’s own record for this family is internally inconsistent for its entire run, not confined to one period: the same December 1974 hangar-donation story that spells the surname “Wogan” recurs in the February 1975 follow-up spelled “Wojan,” and the same St. James real-estate business trades under “Ed Wojan Realty” (the dominant, majority form across the 1980s-2000s) and “Ed Wogan Realty” at the identical telephone number (448-2711/448-2555) in different issues. “Wojan Construction Company” (1975) and “Wojan’s Sawmill and construction company” (1982) are the same firm the paper calls “Wogan Construction Company” in 1972. Given that a single business, a single phone number and a single family recur under both spellings across fifty years of the same newspaper, this is treated here as one surname with a persistent typesetting/OCR-prone spelling split, plausibly because a lowercase “j” and “g” are easily confused on newsprint — not two families. The dominant modern form is Wojan.

On identity. This record consolidates the dump-caretaker notice with a much larger body of Beacon material about a single Walter (Wojan/Wogan) of St. James: the contractor, motel owner, historical-society trustee and father of the children above. The 1973 dump-caretaker notice itself does not restate his full name or occupation history, so the link rests on the shared name, place and period rather than an explicit single sentence tying every role to one man; no source contradicts it. The retrospective “years ago” columns used for the 1951, 1956, 1961, 1963 and 1968 material are the Beacon’s own later re-reporting of its earlier issues, not those issues themselves as directly read; they are treated as a secondary layer on the newspaper’s own record rather than as independent corroboration. Significance

Wojan’s four-decade construction record — cabins, tourist courts, a rectory, docks and two motels — traces the island’s shift from a subsistence fishing and farming economy toward a tourist and second-home economy over the same period, work the Historical Society, Civic Association and township government all drew on for unpaid or contracted labor. The 1963 ice rescue and his repeated appearances in winter-hazard stories place him among the small number of islanders whose equipment and local knowledge were called on when travel across the strait’s ice went wrong.

Open questions

Is the “Walt Wogan” who designed the 1974 emergency-aircraft hangar (Walt Wogan) this same Walter, still active in construction in his later years, or a son working under the family firm?
When was Walter A. Wojan born, and when did he die? A 2011 Charlevoix Courier obituary and a March 2011 Beacon graduation notice document him alive as of that year; no held source gives a birth or death date.
Is Jim Wogan (1971 harbor rescue) the same man as James L. Wojan — merged 2026-08-05 from the flying-club treasurer (1971) and the 1974 bridegroom, on the strength of a 1961 school roster listing him with his siblings and the “Jim (Karen) Wojan” of the 2011 graduation notice — or a separate person the paper also spelled “Wogan”?
