Summary

This record preserves a reported 1901 Peaine Township death entry for a Michael Kan(e) without collapsing it into a conflicting cemetery-marker transcription. The Collar card describes the reported decedent as a single Irish-born farmer, age 62, who died of scarlet fever on 15 January 1901.

Evidence and limits

The same card gives a marker reading for “Michael Kane” with a 29 September 1836 birth and 15 January 1904 death, then explicitly notes that its death-record entry instead says 1839–1901. The card also contains separate, internally uncertain notes about a Michael Kane, Anna Bonner, and a daughter Mary. Those notes could concern one or more people with the same name; the underlying civil and cemetery records have not yet been retrieved.

Accordingly, this is a contested lead record for the 1901 reported death, not a settled biography, cemetery identification, family reconstruction, or proof that the 1901 and 1904 entries refer to the same person.

Significance

Keeping the two dates visible prevents a common archival error: turning a researcher’s unresolved card into a single confident vital record. It also keeps the conflicting evidence together, so a later retrieval of the underlying Peaine civil record or marker can resolve—or separate—the identities.

The transcribed card reports a death record for “Michael Kan,” single, age 62, farmer, born Ireland, who died in Peaine Township of scarlet fever on 15 January 1901. The same card also transcribes a cemetery marker for “Michael Kane” with 1836–1904 dates and notes the conflict. The underlying death record and marker are not held here, so neither identity nor date is silently resolved.
