Summary

Joseph Lawrence “J. Lawrence” Malloy (1893–1970) was born in Escanaba on September 7, 1893 and came to Beaver Island with his parents at age two. The June–July 1970 Beaver Beacon remembers him as the island’s butcher and a former township supervisor. He operated the Meat Market on the harbor and kept a workshop and collection of island stories and relics, some displayed in a Beaver Island Museum room called the “Malloy Room.”

Evidence and limits

The 1970 obituary and a 1963 obituary for his wife, Ethel P. McDonough Malloy, together name six surviving children as of 1970: sons Robert V. Malloy of St. James — see Robert V. Malloy — and Lawrence J. Malloy of Dolton, Illinois (called “Babe” in the cemetery index); and daughters Loretta Loyola “Loy” Malloy of St. James — see Loretta Loyola "Loy" Malloy — Mrs. Arthur (Dorothy) Ryan of Chicago, Mrs. Terry (Mary) Halloran, and Mrs. Lowell (Bernadette) Moore of Muskegon. The cemetery index adds two infant children, Mercedes (1924) and Terrence K. (1933), who predeceased him, and confirms his own parents as Anthony and Bridget Boyle Malloy — a Malloy lineage distinct from that of John P. “Buffalo” Malloy, the father of Sister Mary Clare and Sister Mary Bridgetta Malloy; no held source connects the two families.

The obituary rests on newspaper reporting and local memory. It does not supply a civil birth or death record, the dates of the township-supervisor term, a complete business chronology, or an item-level inventory of the Malloy Room collection. The source’s “museum” wording is not treated as a claim about a separately named museum building or legal institution.
