Summary
Elizabeth Whitney Williams’s 1905 memoir reports that James Jesse Strang established a school for Anishinaabe people at his own expense and sent an unnamed young Mormon to Garden Island, where the teacher remained for three years. The account supplies a source-specific connection among Strang, Garden Island, and schooling in the archipelago.
The event has no defensible start or end date. It is placed broadly in the Strang era because Williams attributes it to Strang, not because the memoir dates the school.
Evidence and limits
This is a retrospective memoir, not a school register, government appointment, church record, land record, or student list. Williams later taught at Garden Island with her husband under a government appointment from 1862 to 1864; that is a distinct teaching period and is not merged with the reported three-year Mormon school.
The memoir uses the period term “Indians,” retained in the source note only. It does not establish student identities, language of instruction, attendance, curriculum, the physical school location, or a complete institutional history.

- Described in this archive: A Child of the Sea; and Life among the Mormons, 1905.Williams writes that Strang “established a school for the Indians at his own expense” and “sent a young Mormon over to Garden Island, where he taught school for three years.” The memoir was published decades later, and the author’s own two-year government teaching appointment there was 1862–1864. The passage does not name the Mormon teacher, students, schoolhouse, curriculum, opening or closing date, or church body, and it does not establish that Chief Peaine administered or attended the school.
