The St. Patrick’s Party for Holy Cross Church is an annual, numbered fundraising dance held by Beaver Island’s expatriate community in Chicago, with proceeds donated to Holy Cross Catholic Church on Beaver Island. Twenty-two editions are now written, covering 1955 and 1958-1979. Fourteen of them carry a printed ordinal in the announcement itself — the 7th (1961), 8th (1962), 12th (1966), 14th (1968), 15th (1969), 16th (1970), 17th (1971), 18th (1972), 20th (1974), 21st (1975), 22nd (1976), 23rd (1977), 24th (1978) and 25th (1979) — and every one of them subtracts back to the same founding year.

This hub is not Beaver Island St. Patrick's Day celebrations. The island hub covers St. Patrick’s Day observances held on Beaver Island itself; this hub covers a separate, geographically distinct diaspora institution held in Chicago. Robert Cole’s 2002 Beaver Beacon retrospective on the island celebration describes the Chicago (and, later, Grand Rapids) parties as running “parallel” to the island tradition rather than as part of it, and this knowledge base preserves that distinction as two hub articles rather than merging them.¹

Origins and the numbering arithmetic

No source held here documents the first Chicago party directly. Instead, five independently numbered editions all agree on the same founding year when the arithmetic is worked back from each one:

All five held numbered titles above, spanning a fourteen-year range, agree exactly on 1955 as the year of the first party, and the editions written since add nine more printed ordinals — 12th (1966), 14th (1968), 15th (1969), 16th (1970), 17th (1971), 22nd (1976), 23rd (1977), 24th (1978) and 25th (1979) — every one of which subtracts to 1955 as well. This is a derived claim, not a directly attested one — no source held here reports on a “1st annual” party in 1955 — but the consistency of fourteen independent data points across nineteen years is unusually strong corroboration for an inferred founding date, and this hub records start_date: '1955' on that basis rather than the more conservative 'by 1961'.

Notably, 1955 is also the year the Beaver Island Civic Association itself reported as its founding year (per its 1985 30-year-anniversary dinner; see Beaver Island Fourth of July celebration), suggesting 1955 may be a more general moment of institution-building among island and diaspora organizations, though no source held here connects the two directly.

Venues and organizers

The party was held at Eagles Hall, 9231-33 Cottage Grove Avenue, Chicago, in 1961 and 1962, and at St. Kevin’s Church Hall in Chicago from at least 1972 through 1975 (the 1974 edition gives the address as 10513 Torrence Avenue). Bernard O’Donnell chaired the 1961 party; Betty Lockton, Bob Delaney, and Musette LaFreniere served as stewards for the 1962 cemetery-fund proceeds; the Bill Stack Band provided music for the 1972, 1974, and 1975 editions. Rev. Bernard Scheid is named as Holy Cross’s pastor in the 1974 and 1975 announcements, with contributions directed to Father Herbert Graf at the parish. No single organizing body or committee spans the whole held run, so this hub does not assert a carried_out_by organization; the party appears in the record as a diaspora-run benefit rather than a parish-run event, even though its proceeds are for the parish.

Community and economic context

Where a benefit amount is reported, it goes to Holy Cross Church or a specific parish fund: the 1962 edition’s proceeds were designated for Holy Cross Cemetery. No held edition gives a dollar total for 1961, 1972, 1974, or 1975; those issues report the planned donation-per-person ($3 in 1972, $4 in 1975) rather than a final accounting. The March 1974 Beacon carries a letter from Martha Gallagher Zalusky describing her attendance and connecting her personally to Rev. Bernard Scheid (her nephew) — the only first-person attendee account held for this series.

Coverage and evidence limits

This series is known only through the Beaver Beacon, which was mailed to island expatriates and regularly carried notices of off-island community events. No source held here documents whether the party continued after 1979, whether it survived the 2011-2023 corpus hole, or whether it has any modern counterpart; the Northern Islander (2024-2026) was not found to mention a numbered Chicago St. Patrick’s party in this pass. The written editions span 1955 and 1958-1979 out of a run this hub’s own arithmetic implies began in 1955; three implied years inside that span — the 2nd (1956), 3rd (1957) and 19th (1973) — have no article because no announcement or report for them has been located in the held corpus.
