Summary
The March 1959 Beaver Beacon announced the Beaver Island Club of Chicago’s St. Patrick’s party for March 21, 1959, at Woodlawn Gardens (1200 East 93rd Street), donation $6.00 for adults and $2.50 for children, with Bernard O’Donnell named as the contact. A brief second-hand comment in the April issue confirms the party happened and “was a good party,” but the Beacon’s own June issue admits it never received a formal report from the Chicago committee on attendance or proceeds.
Program
Music, dancing, and refreshments were implied by the standard party format described elsewhere in the series; this issue itself specifies only the venue, date, time (8:30 p.m.), and the adult/child donation split. Bernard O’Donnell is named as a contact for information, consistent with his role as chairman of the 1961 edition two years later.
Evidence limits
The only account of the party’s outcome is a secondhand, one-line comment attributed to “our roving reporter, Loy Malloy” — not a first-person report, an attendance figure, or a proceeds total. The Beacon’s own June follow-up states plainly that no committee report ever arrived, so this edition’s outcome is effectively undocumented beyond “was a good party.”
Open questions
- Did the Chicago committee ever send the Beacon a fuller report on the 1959 party that simply was not held in this run of issues?
- Was Bernard O’Donnell already chairman in 1959, two years before he is named as chairman of the 1961 edition, or was he acting only as an information contact this year?

- Reports on the island's own celebration and adds only: "The only news that we have about the Chicago Party is from our roving reporter, Loy Malloy. She said, 'was a good party and I had a very good time.' So sorry that we have not heard from our Chicago friends as we go to press." No attendance or proceeds figure is given. - A follow-up complaint that no report ever reached the Beacon: "we have heard absolutely nothing from the committee about the St. Patrick Day Party. We are constantly being asked about these things and all we can do is to shrug our shoulders and say I don't know." Confirms the paper itself never received an outcome report for this edition.
