Summary
On May 27, 1856, the Daily Northern Islander announced that a special conference would be held at Holy Island, Lake Mormon, on July 12. A New York newspaper report of June 23 repeats the notice while quoting the Islander. The announced event and its planned date are recorded; that the conference actually convened is not asserted.
Evidence and limits
The announcement is contemporary and specific about place and date, but no attendance list, proceedings, later issue, or independent confirmation of the meeting is held. Whether the meeting took place as announced is therefore contested here; the existence of the announcement itself is not in question. The event is kept distinct from the 1968 retrospective’s earlier “feast of first fruits” account, whose date is not settled by the held sources.
