Summary

In an October 8, 1964 interview, William Belfy recalled Beaver Island maritime and industrial life from his first 1908 visit through his return to fishing and departure from commercial fishing around 1950. His account covers lumber cargoes and the harbor, work for the Beaver Island Lumber Company, the Silver Star and Venus II, Conservation Patrol Boat No. 1, Fisher Boat Works sub-chaser construction, and the island’s transition after the large fishery declined.

Evidence and limits

This is a retrospective oral-history-style newspaper interview. It preserves Belfy’s testimony but does not replace vessel registries, mill records, crew lists, payrolls, or an independently verified chronology.
