Summary

Shirley Gladish, with her husband Dave, moved to Beaver Island around 1972. She organized and ran the Beaver Island school library from 1975 and helped found the island’s public library roughly a decade later. She served on the Civic Association board from January 1975, and on the Beaver Island Historical Society’s board of trustees from 1977 — first as secretary, then, from December 1979, as Curator-Coordinator and later Curator-Director, becoming, per a 1998 Beacon retrospective, the Society’s “first full-time Director.” She also served for years as a Peaine Township election inspector and planning-committee appointee, exhibited her watercolors and pastels in island art shows, and authored a chapter in the Journal of Beaver Island History.

History

Arrival and library work

A 1996 Beacon letter recalls meeting “Dave and Shirley Gladish in the early 70’s” as neighbors and fellow parishioners at the Beaver Island Christian Church; a 2002 “Thirty Years Ago” retrospective independently places their arrival about 1972.12 By August 1973 she was helping the Museum’s curator alongside four other volunteers.3 From at least 1975, Beacon items describe her organizing and developing the school library and opening it to the public on Fridays; by mid-1975 the collection held over 1,500 new books through the Northland Library System, with summer hours and a planned Beaver Island/Michigan reference collection.45 About a decade later, a committee including Gladish, Jayne Lilly, Theresa Martin, Sue Williams, and Gay Works “talked St. James Township out of some space at the Township Hall” and canvassed the island for spare books to found a public library, work a 1996 retrospective dates to roughly 1986.6 She continued as school (and later public) librarian for decades; a September 2006 item still names her school librarian, announcing library hours of three afternoons a week.7

Civic Association and Historical Society offices

She was elected to the Civic Association board on January 9, 1975.8 At the Historical Society’s November 9, 1977 annual meeting, she was elected to its newly expanded seven-member board of trustees alongside Mary Minor and Sheldon Parker; a week later the board elected her secretary, with Phyllis Townsend as president and Minor as treasurer.9 As secretary in 1978, she developed a roster of Museum volunteers.10 In December 1979, the Beacon reported that “our past secretary-treasurer, Shirley Gladish, has shifted to the job of Curator-Coordinator for the Society.”11 By November 1980 she authored both the treasurer’s and the Curator-Director’s annual reports, and the Society praised her “enthusiasm, efforts and talents” over the fiscal year, noting she “did willingly accept many tasks beyond those duties for which she was hired.”12 A July 1980 Charlevoix Courier feature on the Society’s 25th-anniversary Museum Week quoted “Curator Shirley Gladish”: “Our aim is to interpret what has happened on this island… The island has enough history of its own to be exciting.”13 An April 1998 Beacon item, announcing a successor director’s resignation, states “For several years Phyllis carried on the work begun by Shirley Gladish, the first full-time Director,” establishing her as the Society’s first paid, full-time museum director.14 She continued to be identified as the Historical Society’s “curator” as late as April 2004, proposing a replica log cabin for the Heritage Park.15

Township roles, art, and writing

From August 1985 she served repeatedly as a Peaine Township election inspector, a role Beacon township-meeting notices record through at least 1993.16 In February 1990 she was named, with E. B. Lange, one of Peaine Township’s appointees to a joint-township committee studying a Wade-Trim engineering report.17 As early as November 1976 she organized an island art class, inviting interested residents to meet at the school.18 She went on to show her own watercolors and pastels in island art shows and fairs through the 1980s and 1990s: an April 1986 watercolor show at the Beachcomber, where a reviewer wrote that “the subtle renderings of Shirley Gladish created a soft, almost misty illusion,” a Museum Week art show in August 1988, an August 1989 show that listed her working in “pastel and pencil,” and the July 1990 Fourth of July Art Fair, where she exhibited watercolors alongside other island artists and craftspeople.19202122 As Museum Director she also organized the 1988 Museum Week with Ann Broder and Floss Frank, placing “special emphasis… on Protar, celebrating the 150th year of his birth,” and in August 1989 she directed a Boy Scout troop from Kalamazoo through a Historical Trails Patch service project scraping old paint from the fish tug Bob-S at the Marine Museum.2021 That October she was among those who gathered to hear Charlotte Copp’s account of a chair reputedly belonging to James Strang, donated to the Historical Society that day.23 In August 1991 she personally showed the Mormon Print Shop to Governor John Engler and his wife during their visit to the island, and in 1990 she served both as a paid Peaine Township election inspector, at $7.00 an hour, and on the newly formed Library Committee.2425 She authored “Beaver Islanders, 1848 to 1856: The Ordinary Among the Extraordinary,” a chapter credited to her in a Journal of Beaver Island History volume.26

Significance

Shirley Gladish is documented across more than three decades of Beacon notices in three overlapping roles central to the island’s civic and cultural institutions: founder and long-serving librarian of its school and public libraries, the Historical Society’s first full-time museum director, and a recurring township election official — a combination the sources describe as consistently exceeding the duties she was formally assigned.

Open questions

  • No source read here gives Shirley Gladish’s maiden name, birth or death date, or an independent civil record.
  • The exact year the Historical Society’s Curator-Coordinator role became a paid, full-time directorship, and when Gladish’s tenure as director ended and Phyllis Gregg Moore’s began, are not established from the sources read here.
  • The Beaver Island District Library’s founding date (circa 1986, per a 1996 retrospective) is not independently confirmed against a primary 1986 source in this research.
