History

The earliest held mention is an August 1973 Beacon item thanking “Mrs. Pat Nelson,” alongside four other women and Father Donahoe, for helping the Museum Curator during a season that drew more than 1,400 visitors. The following August, the Beacon thanks “Mrs. Patricia Nelson and friends” for painting much of the Museum’s porch railing and fence; a “Thirty Years Ago” retrospective published in the August 2004 Beacon separately recalls a volunteer crew, including John Gallagher, Patricia Nelson, and the Andrew Crewckshank family, thanked for painting the Mormon Print Shop museum — a closely related, possibly overlapping 1974 museum-painting effort. A “Thirty Years Ago” column in the June 2004 Beacon recalls the Beaver Island Sketchbook’s publication with charcoal sketches by “Patricia Nelson (Sand Bay),” identifying her by location the way the same column identifies co-contributor Elaine Smith by her cottage, “Isle Awhile.”

In March 1975, the Beacon’s “From the Mail Bag” printed a letter signed Patricia Nelson objecting to weakened boat sewage holding-tank regulation and its effect on Sand Bay water quality, and noting her family had spent two months or more on Beaver Island for fifteen summers. A March 2005 “On This Date” retrospective recalls that “Pat Nelson said she disagreed with the recent rescinding of the regulations controlling discharges of boats’ sewage” — evidently a summary of this same 1975 letter rather than an independent notice.

Evidence and limits

The museum volunteer of 1973–1974 and the 1975 correspondent on Sand Bay water quality are treated as one woman, probable rather than established. No single source states this identity outright. The bridge is the specific place-name “Sand Bay,” independently supplied by the June 2004 retrospective’s parenthetical “(Sand Bay)” for the sketchbook artist and by the subject matter of the March 1975 letter itself (a resident writing about Sand Bay water quality), plus the recurring pattern of the same “Patricia/Pat Nelson” name across five separate Beacon items spanning 1973–1975 (and echoed in the 2004–2005 retrospectives), all involving community volunteering or civic correspondence rather than a bare repeated name with no supporting detail. This follows the same name-singularity reasoning used for Frank Neer, which also rests on an unbroken naming pattern across its own sources rather than the stronger spouse/parent/cemetery bridges available elsewhere.

None of the held notices give Nelson’s age, occupation, husband’s name, or a permanent address beyond the Sand Bay association, so this remains a community-episode record rather than a full civil identity.
