Frank Neer was a seasonal or part-time Beaver Island resident, listed in the island telephone directory from at least 1968 to 1973 and living in Detroit by the later 1960s. He appears in the held record twice: trapping feral cats on the island in 1961, and as a hospital patient in Detroit in 1973.

History

The February 1961 Beaver Beacon reports Frank Neer trapping feral cats on the island. The July 1973 Beacon “Hospital Notes” reports him a patient at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Room 3514, Outer Drive, Detroit.

Between and around those two notices the paper carries a continuous household. “Neer Frank…..448-2383” appears identically in the island telephone directories of December 1968, April 1972 and June 1973 — the last a month before the hospital notice. No second Neer entry appears in any directory. Three O’Donnell family obituaries, in September 1965, December 1967 and September 1973, each name “Mrs. Frank Neer of Detroit” among the surviving sisters, always in the same list of three. A son, James Francis Neer, died in service and is named at the war-memorial dedication; a daughter appears in July 1963 as “Mrs. James Broughman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Neer.”

The health record runs the same way: heart attacks treated at Charlevoix Hospital in October and November 1965, discharge to Detroit in December 1965, recuperation “at his home at 2017 Green Avenue, Detroit, Michigan” in January 1971, and the Detroit hospitalisation of July 1973.

Significance

The Neers illustrate a pattern the island’s newspaper record makes visible and its census record does not: the household that is counted somewhere else but belongs here. The Beacon lists Frank Neer’s telephone among the island’s own numbers for at least five years while reporting his address, his wife’s family and his hospitalisations in Detroit. For a community whose population figures swing by a factor of several between February and August, the phone book is in some ways a better record of who counted as an islander than any enumeration.

No source names a spouse’s given name, supplies a birth or death date, or states that the 1961 trapper and the 1973 patient are one man. There is no Holy Cross Cemetery entry for any Neer — checked directly, consistent with a family based in Detroit. What supports the merge is the absence of any second Frank Neer across roughly fifty-five years of the Beacon, an unbroken single telephone listing, one wife identified the same way by three unrelated obituaries, and a coherent decade-long health trajectory ending in the city named in the 1971 address. That is convergence, not proof, and confidence is set to probable rather than established.
