Dominick Gallagher was a Beaver Island lighthouse keeper and a singer and storyteller recorded by Alan Lomax in 1938. The held sources identify him as the island-born keeper at Beaver Head, with roughly thirty years of lighthouse service by 1932, and as the Dominick Gallagher whose songs and memories appear in the Lomax and Walton catalog evidence.

The held Library of Congress sound-recording metadata names him as performer on eight Saint James items dated 24–27 August 1938, some labelled solo and some shared. That establishes the catalogued appearance. It does not establish who performed which component of a compound title, or what the recordings contain.

The 1938 Lomax recordings

The Library of Congress catalog metadata for the eight held Beaver Island items credits “Gallagher, Dominic” as performer on every one, several jointly with other island singers. On AFS 02267 B and 02268 A he sings “Roll Her to the Wall” (identified in the catalog notes as a variant of “Captain Wedderburn’s Courtship,” Child Ballad No. 46) and “Rich Merchant.” AFS 02268 B pairs a “Gallagher Boys” performance credited to him with a spoken “Gallagher boys” monologue credited to his son Andrew E. Gallagher — a ballad about the Gallagher family itself, also catalogued under the title “Lost on Lake Michigan.” AFS 02269 A pairs his song “Beaver Brig” with “Rousy Maggie,” played on fiddle by Patrick Bonner, then 55. AFS 02274 A includes a recorded discussion of “Lowlands,” sung by John W. Green, and a second track of Gallagher speaking about “Gallagher Boys” in which Ivan Walton’s voice is also audible. AFS 02286 A and B pair his songs “Gone again, too-ri-addy” with Green’s “Lament of the Irish Immigrant” and “Robin Thompson’s Daughter.” AFS 02290 A holds his solo performance of “Bonny Irish Boy.” The recordings were made at Saint James between August 24 and 27, 1938.

Identity boundary

This record is kept separate from Dominick Gallagher. The 1904 obituary identifies a different Dominick as born in 1827 and deceased in 1904; that man cannot be the approximately 70-year-old 1938 singer. The cemetery directory identifies this later man as the child of “Big Dominick” and Mary Greene and gives 1867–1953, but its death year conflicts with the held 1952 obituary, and an external cultural-history page gives 1954. Until a primary vital or burial record settles it, this article keeps the conservative circa-1863 birth and 1952 death year.

Evidence and limits

The sources support the lighthouse-keeper role, the 1938 catalog attribution, the named wife and son, and a strong cemetery identity bridge to the parents listed there. The held corpus does not yet provide a civil birth record, a primary death record, or a direct recording transcript. Because the death years conflict, the recorded lifespan is deliberately the cautious one.

Lomax’s 1939 report independently places a Dominick Gallagher at the Beaver Island recording stop with Johnny Green. It supports the archive connection, but does not resolve the singer’s full biography or establish the identity of every Gallagher catalog label.
