Summary

Dominick Gallagher was a Beaver Island pioneer born in Ireland in 1827 who arrived on Beaver Island in 1857 and died there in late 1904. The 1904 report says he was the father of twelve children and that his mother, Katherine Gallagher, was still living at age 104.

Identity boundary

The record here is kept separate from Dominick Gallagher, whose sources place a much younger Dominick at the Beaver Head lighthouse and in the 1938 Lomax recordings. The held sources do not establish whether the two men were related.

Evidence and limits

The newspaper reports provide a source-bounded birth year, migration year, death month, and family counts but do not name his wife or children. The original OCR’s “Domiaick” is preserved as an alternate spelling rather than silently corrected; the 1944 retrospective supplies the clearer Dominick form.

Open questions

  • What were the names of his wife and twelve children?
  • Which Irish parish, civil, census, cemetery, or probate records identify this family?
  • Is there a documented relationship to the younger lighthouse keeper and singer?
