- Beaver Island History Map, 1978 revision
Summary
McClure Oil Company was working on well No. 1 near Hannegans Corner in August 1960, approximately 150 yards southwest of the end of King’s Highway.
Evidence and limits
The newspaper supplies a local relative location but not a survey, parcel, permit, well depth, or result. It is linked to the July preliminary-drilling notice as a later stage of the same reported exploration effort.
The 1978 Beaver Island History Map calls this the first of three McClure test wells and dates it to 1961. The contemporary August 1960 report corrects that date. The December 1961 Beacon independently calls the later site near the sawmill Well No. 2 and the Iron Ore Bay drilling Well No. 3, supporting the three-well sequence. Their exact map symbols remain unverified pending official permits, well logs, or surveys and are not used here to infer coordinates.

- The map calls No. 1 the first of three McClure Oil test wells and dates it to 1961. The contemporary August 1960 notice disproves that date. The December 1961 Beacon explicitly identifies Well No. 2 near the sawmill and Well No. 3 at Iron Ore Bay, but no held permit or well log securely establishes any of the three map symbols as surveyed points.
