Summary
Eastern Michigan University’s Historic Preservation graduate program held a field school on Beaver Island from May 20 through May 28, 2022. The reported work joined practical preservation at the Beaver Island Light Station, field documentation of the station and Lighthouse School campus, and collections work at the Beaver Island Historical Society’s Print Shop.
What occurred
The final report describes a six-student preservation team working for about five days on lantern-room and screen-door repairs and condition assessment. A heritage-recording team produced drawings, plans, photographs, and field notes; the report says it focused additional recording on the Lighthouse School campus and supporting buildings where existing digital documentation was limited. A collections team assessed the Society’s policy, proposed a draft revision, and inventoried 139 boxes in the Print Shop storage area.
Evidence and limits
This event records the field school and the tasks the report describes as completed. It does not make the report’s adaptive-reuse ideas—such as a water trail stop, trades program, or artist residency—implemented facts. The report also does not establish the current condition of the light station, the status of suggested future work, or an exhaustive inventory or provenance record for the Society’s collections.
