Summary
The June 20, 1941 Charlevoix County Herald announced that Beaver Island would host the County Agents Summer Conference for the second time on Monday and Tuesday, June 23–24. About 60 extension workers and their wives were expected; the announced program included an island tour and a party at the St. James Town Hall.1
The announcement names R. J. Baldwin, extension director; C. V. Ballard, county agent leader; Roy Decker, assistant agent leader; and specialist members of the extension staff. It identifies the King Strang Hotel as conference headquarters.
The notice was signed by B. C. Mellencamp, the Charlevoix County agricultural agent, who wrote that the choice to return to the island “was nearly unanimous, as everyone remembered the first visit and the wonderful time enjoyed,” and that “no community can exceed Beaver Island when it comes to hospitality and friendliness.”1 The “second time” wording and Mellencamp’s reference to a remembered “first visit” indicate an earlier county-agents conference on the island, but the held issue does not date it or otherwise describe it.
Evidence and limits
This record preserves a dated conference announcement and its planned program. The issue does not report attendance, proceedings, the names of all extension workers or spouses, the tour route, or the town-hall program’s outcome. The hotel’s use as headquarters is an event-specific attestation, not evidence of its construction date or complete operating history.
