Summary
This federal annual report preserves a measured 1898 observation about Beaver Island fisheries: the Fish Commission did not send lake-trout egg-collection effort there that fall, despite calling the area one of the most productive sections in past years.
What the report records
The report says the Commission scheduled its fall work around spawning timing. It expected Beaver Island lake trout to spawn no earlier than 1 November, while the active collection ran through early November. Later October letters from fishers reported many spawning fish and suggested that eggs might be collected there during the closing days of future seasons.
Evidence and limits
This is a federal fisheries-management record, not a census of fishers or a commercial landings table. “One of the most productive sections in past years” is the Commission’s qualitative characterization; it has no stated measure, years, species-wide definition, or island-only catch total. The report does not show that eggs were subsequently collected at Beaver Island.

Page LXXIX says that no effort was made to attend the Beaver Island fisheries during the fall lake-trout egg collection because trout there did not usually spawn before 1 November; it calls the island one of the most productive sections in past years and reports later letters from fishers describing large numbers of spawning fish.
